The only GOOD thing about Sacramento is that you can easily get to GOOD places like the Bay Area and Tahoe from there easily. Other than that Sacramento doesn't have a lot going for it. The town couldn't be more boring. We moved to Austin from there (and lived there 20 years), this city is so vibrant and exciting and whenever I go home to see family I remember just how "sleepy" of a town Sacto has always been.

You might want to be ElsewhereBound then. In case you weren't aware, Sacramento doesn't exactly get an abundance of snow either. If you actually want to live in snow, California isn't a great place for most people. Not a whole lot of jobs in the parts of California that get an appreciable amount of snow.

I spent the last few years living in Siskiyou County. Unfortunately, there are more things to consider in life than snow.

You can get to Tahoe in an hour unless its a weekend and you are stuck in traffic.....and home again in that same hour...again unless you leave when everyone else does...then its closer to 2.5.

Sacramento's outter areas including Roseville, Folsom, Rocklin, etc has a huge culture of snowboarders and Skiiers. Most of them would never use or know about forums like this. If that is your scene, you will feel right at home. The reason why Squaw Valley, Kirkwood, and all the other major Ski resorts lasted all these years is mainly because of the steady stream of skiiers/boarders from the Sacramento Metro Area. Your not living in the snow, but your so close its easy to get to. 60semi is right, it can take from 1 hour and 15 minutes to 2 hours and 15 minutes depending upon how many Gapers are on the roads..

Sacramento's average household income is slightly below the national average. About 47k to the national average of 50k. So Sacramento is actually pretty average in terms of COL. It's probably about as close to normal as it gets. The question shouldn't be what makes Sac so cheap, rather what makes other areas hyper-inflated.

Uh. Are we talking about the Sacramento? You can get to Tahoe in an hour from El Dorado Hills and then if you live practically ON the freeway (most people do not) and drive like a bat out of hell. It's more like 1.75-2 hours from Sacramento. That is, unless your talking about the people who leave at 2 a.m. and drive well over a 100.

I lived in Houston for 45 years with the heat and humidity. The weather here is better than anywhere in Texas about 90% of the time (I lived other places in Texas too). The other 10% of the time (really hot, bad air days) I wish I were someplace else.

On the 2nd of July, I was at Bidwell and Riley in Folsom at 6:50am. I stopped at the Walmart in Shingle Springs for 15 min/half an hour, and was still at Echo Lakes by 8:15am. 65 the whole way.
It did take me another half an hour to get to Folsom from Roseville though...
