I think that before folks get too worked up about living in or around Stockton they should actually take about 1/2 hour or so and drive around the north side. Go up and down main streets like Pacific Ave and March Lane, and then go and drive around the neighborhoods off of these main streets.

I understand the bad publicity about Stockton, and not stating they haven't had some problems. But the city has some really pretty and nice relatively safe areas too, and I wouldn't be so quick just to dismiss it.

Having stated this, if you want to live in a really quaint small town with some conveniences and good housing prices, it it tough to beat Lodi.

Lodi is very pleasant. Live in town.

Stockton is pleasant on the north end and Weston Ranch. Avoid the rest of it.

Disagee about Weston Ranch. Brookside and most portions of Lincoln Village West would be a MUCH better pick.

Has the decay set in that fast?

The housing bubble bust devestated that suburb. Still many good people and families living there but I would look first in the other areas that I posted.

Lodi is safe and offers many of the urban amenities. Plus you have the wineries that are in abundance (especially on the west side). I would suggest checking neighborhoods just west of downtown Lodi to be close to both. Lodi impressed me much more than Elk Grove and is also the safer of the two cities. The south Sacramento "Florin" neighborhood borders the northern neighborhoods of Elk Grove. I would only live in the southern or eastern portions of Elk Grove. Lodi is a good 15 miles north of Stockton. I have visited both. If you are the type that needs to be out until 2 AM, maybe it falls short, but it is a nice town.

A lot of the "culture" of Lodi (music, etc) is not in the traditional format, but the larger wineries make up for it by hosting events that you will probably like. If you like wine, it makes up for the lack of amenities that a large city may have. Lodi is the wine capital of the Central Valley. Check out both areas before deciding.

I should have added that the south Sacramento "Florin" neighborhood is gang territory and not safe.

I'd say at the border of Elk Grove & north into South Sac is ghetto land...from Meadowview/ Valley Hi area between Hwy 99 & I5. The east-to west road would roughly be Meadowview Rd, to Mack Rd > Elsie Rd at Hwy99. Elsie stops at Power Line Rd (Howe) but if you were to continue east, that would be the border.

I've been commuting to Lodi for years and I live in Midtown Sacramento. It takes me about 35 min each way.
