My husband and I are considering moving from MN to CA next year. We are looking on the east side of the state, somewhere between Grass Valley and Sonora. What are the safer towns and which towns offer the most employment near these areas? I realize it is a rather broad area, but we do have our reasons! Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Almost any place is as good as another in regards to crime. Plymouth has the worst reputation and most of that is nuisance issues limited to the town itself.

For jobs, Auburn and Placerville have the most jobs only because they are part of the greater Metro area. You will likely have to drive into Folsom or Roseville, at the closest. Grass Valley doesn't have many jobs available, but mom and pop businesses do well there.

Avoid Marysville.

Thank you, would you happen to know what the average income is for someone who has a great job history in facilities/building maintenance? How about administrative/web design?

Most of the towns on the eastern slope are little mountain towns and some of Sacramento's easternmost suburbs...not much in the way of jobs. Probably the most dangerous place in that stretch of land (which Marysville is not in, btw) is Folsom, which I'd consider safe to the point of being really, really boring. You might try the California general forum as most of that area is pretty distant from Sacramento.

Problem with employment in the mother lode is most people take their jobs to the grave. I often say to check the obituaries for work openings.

The least safe place between the two (i.e. on 49) would either be Auburn or Placerville. I'd still leave my car unlocked in most of either town though. Maybe Jackson with hoodlums attracted to the casino. Of course, there are very few jobs in the area outside of those 3 places - and most of Auburn and Placerville are commuters, but both are county seats, so there are jobs related to that.

Other than that, the least safe you'd be is from wild animals instead of people.

LOL that's almost true.

For the OP, No place is safe, but I'd rather live in the foothills than in ANY city in terms of crime. You're probably going to need to get close to Sacramento for both of you to find employment in your fields. Good Luck.

Exactly and you would know wouldn't you.

OP:

As DMenscha stated you will need to live within commuting distance to the major urban areas like Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto. All of which are within the commute zone of your preferred living area. I would find jobs first then look for places to live. BTW see that little house next to DMenscha's screen name. Its a clue when looking for property in the foothills.

Thanks for the promo bulldog, but I don't work in any location that the OP might need to live.
