Turlock sounds like a reasonable place to be? (San Francisco, Sacramento: mortgages, new home)

Hello all. I am still looking at information for Turlock and am limited to what is shown on the web. Anyone living in Turlock or around it want to fill me in on the skinny? Basically I am a Professional and my Husband does retail, etc. We have 10 year old twins and a 4 year old that will be moving with us. I want to make sure there is plenty for them to be involved in while growing up in a nice, friendly and SAFE environment that offers cultural diversity while being able to maintain some conservative family values. Asking too much? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Kacy

Hi Kacy,
I live about 25 miles from Turlock, and it seems like a great place to raise a family. I can't give you specifics about activities for kids, but it's a family-oriented town that has really grown. I remember going camping there as a kid, right on the Merced River.

As you probably know, it's smack-dab in the middle of California so an easy drive to Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, etc. I envy the residents for all the big stores there, I drive over about once a month for Home Depot, Costco and Target. Then again, I'd probably go broke if they were in my town, LOL.

The weather is great, right now it's about 80*. I think you'll really like it, and people are friendly. We're not all crazy here, LOL.

Gosh, it has been way to long since I have checked in. Thanks Amy for the response, we are still planning on coming that direction and Turlock is still number one on my list. StampinTami we chose CA for several reasons (1) one of my 10 year olds is a special needs child who needs a good solid educational and transitional program with a variety of services available to him after high school (which is not an option in TN), (2) Lots of family in Calavaris County and (3) both my husband and I are capped out with where we can move with upward mobility for work right now, meaning if we stay here we are pretty much stuck with life the way it is right now. All of those things appear to have a greater opportunity to remedy in CA. Kathie

I think you will be happy in choosing Turlock. CA has great services for students with special needs. If you have specific questions, there is a parent hotline 1-800-926-0648.

There are lots of activities in the area and Turlock has lots of new homes and is family oriented. Let me know if you have more questions.

I think that Turlock would be a good choice for you. It is one of the nicer areas left in Ca, IMO. They are growing pretty rapidly so growth problems would be a concern of mine. I graduated from Turlock High School but that was almost 10 years ago.

Turlock has hot weather during the summer...often 3 digits especially in August. It gets cold in winter with fog and gray skies. No snow though.

Turlock has a reputation for being a church town...I guess there's lots of churches in the area. There is a California state university in the town and lots of new growth.

If you have a special needs child, know your rights and be outspoken to get the things your child is entitled to.

Hi, I live just North of Turlock and my husband worked in Turlock until about two months ago.

What I like about this area is that there is still some farm land. I enjoy taking drives down country roads on a hot summer evening.

If you are a professional, you may have to commute to Sacramento, Stockton or the Bay Area, depending on what you do. My husband is now working in Stockton and his beginning salary is more than what he left with in Turlock.

The city has its nice parts and not-so-nice parts like any city. It is surrounded by farm land. I don't know how long that will last,though with so many homes being built. Turlock is experiencing quite a bit of growth with an influx of Bay Area residents (and others). I don't think most local wages are on a par with mortgages and rents.


howefortunate is right about the weather. This last summer saw amazingly HOT HOT weather. The fog can get bad, but it's a short season.

Unfortunately, I think this is true with most of the valley here. Wages are way too low for our costs of living around here.

its not just the valley its the whole state. I believe the statistic is 16% of californians can afford a home at the states meadian home price.
