Okay so this is my first post on this site.
I am wondering if people can help out with any information about the Sacramento area. I live in the South and I hate it here, I would rather be out west, I am one of those progressive minded people who loves California the way it is. I have lived in CA before so I know what I am getting into but it was in LA. I have a 10 yr old son with full custody and I don't want him to grow up around the degenerates of the south. Schools are important but in the end no one is more capable of teaching him then I am.
I want a place that is great for growing food, where you can almost just drop the seeds and the plants start growing on their own. I want to be close to university's and near a city.
I want the house prices to reflect today's economy not 5 years ago. So nothing over 150,000 and I expect a nice house in a safe happy neighborhood for that kind of money. I currently live in a nice place 1/2 an hour from the Ocean and we are big time into water sports, swimming, surfing, snorkeling, canoeing so I don't mind giving up the close access to the ocean BUT I need water, with all those options for activity.
Also, I like warm weather but nothing over 100 degrees, 90's are fine though, I do hate the cold- more then most people. I LOVE SF but I think the weather in the Bay area is crap because its so cold. I once read a quote from Mark Twain that the coldest winter he ever had was the summer he spent in SF, My sentiments exactly. That being said, I am concerned about Global Climate Change and I think maybe moving to an area that is cold now could be warm/hot in 20 years- so maybe an area that is cold now wouldn't be a bad idea....(just thinking)
I don't like flaky, ignorant, mindless people (which is why I am leaving the south) so a multi racial area where people don't mind not living in Stepford ville is ideal for me. I like the prices in Stockton actually and I think the ROI could be nice but I am not sure it is big enough for me.... I "think" Sacramento is more for me. One of these days I might actually have time to find a partner so I don't want to be surrounded by men fighting over the same 3 ladies.
Based on that, any advice?

You sound like an independent young father. A couple of things caught my attention. For 150K you will not find much in Sacramento. It is also a very long drive to the ocean.
If you want schools which offer classes to enhance your boy's future you will need to have an income to match those goals. If your boy is very bright he might qualify for gifted classes. If he does well in school currently obtain letters from his teachers etc.
Does your son have a relationship with his mother and/or other family members? If so the transition away could take some goal setting and talking.
Finally what do you do for work, that will be the linchpin in this potential plan.
California any where near the ocean is very expensive.

Realism and open-mindedness!
Sacramento might fit the bill but for the weather. 100+ days are not "rare" during the summer, nor are cool to cold mornings.
Given your opinion of the south, I question your "progressiveness" only because you seem to have a rather dim view of subsets of people who may not be in total agreement with you and those views and judgments will accompany you out west.
While Sacramento is a very diverse area, in its very diversity are found people from all walks of life, educational achievements and lack thereof, beliefs and credos, socio-economic circumstances and those considered law-abiding as well as those who decidedly aren't. Any place that includes only and precisely the type of people you seek would, indeed, be some form of a
::::shudder:::: Stepford.
Good luck in your search.

Sacramento has the most diverse population. People from so many cultures, it is really very interesting and opens ones mind. If I had kids I would think it would be ideal. I lived there for 4 years and enjoyed it. Felt like home with access to SF and mountains.

Thank you for your response.
Yes, my son is already in gifted classes now and it is just me raising him- biomom is gone, in the words of Dean Martin, "she went up the river with a sack of cats". His IQ was tested and he came out with an impressive number so they put him in gifted. He also plays classical piano, I'm very proud of him. What do I do for work? Everything... I went to school for Computer Networking but for the last few years I have been involved with digital media. (mostly professional HD video stuff for the web) I am strong at sales but only if I care about the product.
I don't need to be near the ocean, I would love to be but I am know the prices out there and I know I have to give it up, I just need some clean water near by for other things like swimming, canoeing, snorkeling etc. I am thinking rivers, springs and lakes... I can drive to the ocean now and then to get my fill.
I know 150 isn't high compared to yesterdays standards but with today's economy being what it is I think it is closer to reality. I don't mind picking up a foreclosure.

You're welcome. Sactown gets hot as stated previously. Why Cali?
Other areas of the country are uber more affordable for families and more focused on children. The public schools here in Cali are simply awful IMHO unless you are in the high rent districts. The humidity of the South and East may be an impediment (would be for me).
Redding CA has many of the qualities in schools, and access to lakes near Redding and Mount Shasta BUT the summers can be very hot. Its an up and coming area. And nearer to Shasta it's beautiful.
I don't mean to steer you away from Cali but since your boy is bright I would suggest you look to areas that actually are ready to help families. Even here in San Diego they are talking about laying off 600 teachers. In addition, drugs in Cali schools are rampant.
Computer networking I know little about so I cannot help there.
Sounds like you have your **** together and are a good dad to your boy. Now you just want to find that spot where you can find where you both will be happy. Open the doors is my advice and look around.

Redding isn't all that great for what you're seeking. The unemployment rate is higher, it gets hotter in summer and colder in winter than Sacramento. There aren't many major employers outside the medical field (they have a regional hospital) and the schools aren't all that spectacular either. The country is beautiful but there is no shortage of beautiful country in California.
Unemployment in the U.S. - Google Public Data Explorer
$150K could be adequate depending on where you're looking--it is enough for a suitable house in a decent neighborhood, but not a fantastic house in a fantastic neighborhood. Sacramento is highly suburbanized, if you want to have a backyard garden or participate in a community garden there are plenty of opportunities but the soil in a developed neighborhood is not the same as the fertile soil of the valley or delta where there is still farming but not many suburbs. That being said, you can have a pretty good backyard garden even in downtown Sacramento. Here's a search tool for houses via the Sacramento Bee:
http://www.sacbee.com/homes/#navlink=navbar
Regarding the weather: Highs here go above 100 for a couple weeks a year, although the past few years have been extraordinarily mild, with limited numbers of 100+ degree days. I sometimes joke with my Portland friends that we stole their summers, as they have had an increasing number of heatwaves! It's also a very dry heat--nothing like a syrupy, swampy humid Southern summer. A 100 degree day in Sacramento is more comfortable than an 85 degree day in the humid South or Midwest! And because most of our neighborhoods have a lot of trees, shade makes a huge difference--in dry weather, being in shade makes even 100+ degree days far more comfortable. The legendary Delta breeze also helps during the evenings in neighborhoods closest to the Sacramento River.
Stockton is rough. The city government is literally on the verge of declaring bankruptcy, and unemployment, while a bit lower than Shasta County (Redding) is higher than Sacramento County.
Nearby water options include the Sacramento River for boating and fishing (especially pretty farther south into the Sacramento River Delta), the American River for rafting and bike trails, Lake Natoma for canoeing and Folsom Lake for all of the above plus swimming.

I would disagree and encourage the OP to call the district schools in the places he considers. Some school districts have great gifted curriculum. Redding may be one. Crime is low, safety is high, drugs are low, families are cohesive and strict while providing freedom for students expression. Yes it is hot however Whiskeytown Lake is 5 miles out of town and numerous aquatic and park/recreation opportunities exist there. The cost of living is lower than Sacramento and the crime rate is uber lower than Sactown. I have lived in both and if I were a single dad making ends meet I would be in Redding over Sac any day.
Finally, there is the recreation factor which is a huge component of his post. There is no comparison to the Shasta Trinity area for camping, lake swimming and affordability. My short list would also include small towns in Vermont and Mass.
