I am looking to rent in Sacramento. I do not know what the safe and unsafe areas are. I saw ad for place around McClatchey park and it sounded nice . I want to be able to walk the dog after dark, not be concerned about break ins etc. No kids so dont care about schools.
I live in safe suburbia now. I know Land Park is good but is unaffordable. Any advice. |

Sorry, McClatchy Park is in a very unsafe area of Sacramento. Probably why the rents are cheaper.
If you can't afford the Land Park or McKinley Park areas, you could look more toward Tahoe Park. This area is near 65th Street and Broadway. I used to have a rental home in this area and my brother-in-law lives in this area. The rents are pretty cheap and we never had trouble with safety. The area around Fruitridge Road and 65th Street also has some nice and cheaper areas. Before you decide on an area, check with local residents. There are gangs in the South Area and pockets of some good, some bad areas. The safety of the neighborhood can change drastically in just a few blocks. The residents will know what the area is like. |

Dear Friend:
The park area proper has in the past some troubles after dark with homeless and druggies. There is a large area identified as the Oak Park neighborhood with approximately 20 thousand residents. I have returned to this area where I grew up, when it was in its heyday, we didn't lock our doors and the keys were safe left in the ignition. Ten years ago I became active with the Oak Park Neighborhood Association and Drug Free Zone. We fought for the closure of two liquor stores and when they were closed the crime and illegal sales dropped dramatically. As the socio-economic resident base has improved, and the spirit of Oak Park revitalized, we are enjoying a rebounding real estate even though the market has been depressed. As part of the redevelopment of the City of Sacramento focuses upon this neighborhood, you might find that purchasing a home a better investment of your time and money. Get in on it now while the prices and interest are down, or rent a place. Either way you will find supportive neighbors. There are some rough blocks it's true. We are working on them. Walking your dog shouldn't be a problem. Not knowing what areas you have been checking on, I couldn't advise you. Be happy. |

Good for you on being proactive about changing a neighborhood
rather than just fleeing it. |
