I know that $85k/yr is like minimum wage in the Bay Area but I am wondering, Will it do for a start before the wife starts working as well, in Sacramento?

I have a 6 and a 1 year olds and so, my next question will be decent elementary schools - I have time before worrying about high school which tends to be a hassle.

I really Thank you all very much in advance for your honest opinion.

I love the Bay Area but it looks like Sacramento is the next best thing in Northern California, especially with housing for us now. We will depend on my income only for the first six to 12 months.

Thanks again.

Yes, that's greater than the average salary in Sacramento...so you'll do fine.

I definitely think that it's doable, but it really depends upon your current debt load and spending habits. I see from some of your posts that you were also looking at the Bay Area where housing costs for buying and renting are much higher. $85K in Sacramento will get you a better life than most of the Bay Area with possibly a few outlying cities as exceptions.

In the Sacramento area, which for me includes surrounding cities in Placer County (Roseville, Rocklin, Granite Bay, Loomis, Newcastle, etc.), you should be able to get a killer deal on a home should you wish to buy for under $300K and you should be able to get a fairly decent home if you decide to rent for under $2K. Housing costs are normally your largest expense.

Best wishes!

Real estate is a lot less expensive, a nicer suburb like Roseville with low crime and good schools is more along the prices you'd find in someplace like Hayward or San Leandro. At the same time, the median family income in Roseville is quite a bit more than $85k -- more around $105-115k, which is similar to Mountain View just the houses cost a lot less. Sacramento is a lot less conspicuous consumption than a lot of the Bay Area too.

But yeah, if $85k is "minimum wage" to you in nicer, but not really affluent, parts of the Bay Area like Mountain View, then I really don't know that it'll be enough to cut it.

Will $85K "cut it" for an average family? Easily. Whether it would for yours depends on your spending habits.

I agree with most of that, but there are very few enclaves where the median income is about $100k and Roseville ain't one of them. This is all from City Data.
Roseville:$68,208
Folsom:$87,787
Sacramento:$47,107

You'll generally be OK in Sacramento at that income level. If you are looking to rent a home for a year or so, you should be able to find something with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths for around $1,500-$1,800 in an area with decent schools.

Family income. It was $86k some in 2007, might not be quite up over 100k but I'd hazard a guess that it is. Folsom was $109k in 2007, Granite Bay $119k, EDH $125k. If you go into the Bay Area, it's exceedingly common.
