I find it interesting that most of the responses to any "where to buy a house" posts never ask where the people actually work. I realize that people from one end of the metro area to the other (it's never as bad as people commuting from Lodi to San Francisco or whatever), but it's still a serious consideration because it has very clear effects on quality of life, while buying a bigger house generally doesn't. I'm not at all being judgmental about people's decisions, just thought I'd add my normal and expected rant about commuting.

commuting is definitely important to us, and both antelope and natomas are decent commutes for my husband. elk grove would be pretty far though. my husband works near el camino and 50 and might get another job, but would be near either rancho cordova or antelope. we wouldnt know which until he got the job though, and that could be several months from now. so it would be nice to have a location kind of in the middle of those two i guess.

Not aware of El Camino Ave hitting Rt 50, do you mean I-5? If so, then Elk Grove would give you a commute of about 20 miles and 35-40 minutes in rush hour.

If his job moves to Rancho Cordova, he has an easy commute up Grant Line Rd to either Excelcior Rd/Sunrise Blvd or Power Inn Rd to Highway 50. Again, you are generally looking at a maximum commute of 20 miles and 40 minutes.

No not I-5, oops I meant 80. lol Thinking 50 cause we live off 50. Not looking for more than a 20 minute commute really. my husband only drives 10-15 now and loves it.

That commute requirement would pretty much narrows you to Antelope. I'd take a look at Fair Oaks too, but though the area is generally considered a bit nicer than Antelope, with better schools, the price might be a little tight.

well we dont know if he will end up with a job near rancho or antelope, but i think natomas would be fine for either one. i was hoping there might be some other neighborhoods we could look in because if its a really great neighborhood and a great house, then he can drive further. sacramento is such a huge area and i dont know so many neighborhoods. we were considering citrus heights or orangevale, but someone told me those werent great areas really.

Fair Oaks would be a better alternative than Citrus Heights or Orangevale.

I would suggest that you go visit the neighborhoods you are considering, on different days & times of the week. That will give you a first hand view of the neighborhood atmosphere. It really works! I did it for 4 years, and then once I found my desired hood, I made even more frequent drive bys. I'm extremely happy with my choice.

We are trying to narrow it down to what areas are the safest and nicest for the family, but still have nicer homes that are bigger. We were thinking Antelope, Natomas, maybe, but we are just unsure about which neighborhoods will be best. I know I don't want to live in South Sac, Rancho, N Highlands - the obvious not great neighborhoods. So which areas do you think would work for us? Thanks!
Hello, We have people moving in from other parts of Sacramento including Folsom (priced out of Folsom or unable to get the right size home for the price) to our neighborhood (Anatolia). Yes it's in Rancho Cordova but the neighborhood is well south of the high crime areas of Rancho and is surrounded by protected open space as well as grasslands used for grazing. Although we are part of Rancho we are within the Elk Grove School District and kids attend Sunrise Elementary, Katherine Albiani Middle and Pleasant Grove High all part of the Elk Grove School District and have strong API scores. The downside...nearest retail is about 5-10 miles into Rancho or Folsom off Prarie City, the reputation of Rancho (NOT the crime or schools), and Mello Roos. The upside large homes (you could get a near 3000 sq foot newer home in your budget), resident owned 10,000 sq foot clubhouse with pools (lap pool, family pool and toddler pool), fitness center with high quality machines, low crime,an HOA which keeps the area well kept and easy commute to 50, Folsom and beyond . Great time to be a buyer! best wishes wherever you buy.

Carmichael is nice, not much crime and more affordable these days.
Down side is not much to do for kids as the only public pool shut down years ago.
Fair Oaks is more upscale but more expensive. Good luck!
