The trains in Dallas sound just like the trains in Sacramento. I was hoping someone would respond to your question who takes the train more than I do. It should take about 30 minutes from midtown to Sunrise mainly because there are LOTS of stops. They do allow bikes on the train. If you are a woman and will be riding other than rush hour, you will want to sit in the first car because there is NO security on the train. If you're a man, you should be fine. Just like Dallas, the people taking the train during times other than rush hour are pretty fragrant and talk to themselves often, but I haven't heard of too many incidents on the train. There was one person killed several years ago, but he was waiting at one of the stations and it was not during the commute hour.

You will like Davis. It's pretty family oriented, but it is a college town so there should be a lot of people your age. There are lots of things going on there and it's pretty safe and green. Lots of coffee shops and restaurants. You can get everywhere by bike. The commute to Sacramento will be a reverse commute so it shouldn't be too bad. There are a couple of commuter buses from Davis to downtown that Regional Transit operates if you don't want to drive. You would have to walk a few blocks to catch the train to Rancho. Sac RT is very helpful if you need help picking the best routes and schedules.
