I didn't read the whole post but I know where you need to go.

You are thinking of something like Santana Row in San Jose Or Union Square in San Francisco.

Home | Santana Row

Union Square Shopping, Dining & Travel Guide - San Francisco Shopping

That is the only two places where you can look at those type of brand names to window shop and have somewhere to eat and people watch. There is nothing like that here. The only thing that tries to emulate that is the Roseville Fountains.

There is nothing like that around here.

Room to roam, demographically quite different and comparitively very little crime. It was quite a little bit of nothing when I moved to Sacramento in 1990 but has certainly taken off since.

You probably already know, but don't miss the Friday night concert in the park (at the CSD, corner of Harvard and EDH Blvd). Starts at 7pm, but free bounce houses open around 6:15-6:30 and there's less of a line early. Just bring your blankets, food, short lawn chairs and enjoy. El Dorado Hills Community Services District -- Recreation, Parks, Events, El Dorado Hills Community Services
Also, the Regal cinema in EHD at town center have childrens movies for $1 every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10am during summer. One PG, one G movie both days.

Hope you had a good move down here and are finding fun stuff to do.

Try the Fountains next to the Galleria. Cute shops. You might also check out Auburn on Saturday mornings. They have a nice farmers market and tours of old town. Other than that, think about this as a clean slate, a chance to try things you never have before and see a new part of this beautiful state. It might be an easier transition if you look at it as an opportunity rather than trying to measure it against a place it really isn't. Pick up a copy of John Muir's My First Summer in the Sierras for a refreshing perspective. You only go around once--enjoy it!

Well maybe the comment was pretty harsh, but it is annoying to hear everything "we" have be poo-poo'ed. I couldn't feel more different from the OP. To not like any of the beautiful places in El Dorado County in exchange for gazing at designer labels makes no sense to me. If tahoe is too touristy then so are the shopping districts in so cal! I am appreciative of the fact that sac countY has the marvelous American river bike trail, which anybody can use, even the disabled. The wide open spaces, rivers, lakes, mountains, plus a metro city all in one? Not bad. I may trade it all for the ocean, but certainly not for some shopping district. I would never go to the shopping district so cal and proclaim, "where's your ski resort? Shopping sucks".

But I'm glad midtown was fun and I'm sure that it must be nice to take a much needed break taking care of two elderly relatives.

If I can find the time I will hit up old Ironsides or maybe the run over to the press club. It's been too long.

Curmudgeon -- My husband and I moved from SoCal here to take care of elderly relatives who live in Placerville. When we went looking for a place to live, we knew we had to make lots of trips several times a day to Placerville where my husband's family lives. We tried to find a home in Placerville and at the time, we couldn't find anything that fit our needs. The only house we could find at the time that was close enough to drive back and forth to Placerville several times a day was in El Dorado Hills. So here we are in El Dorado Hills.

la_cavalière -- I am far from boring. Just because I don't share the same interests that others do in the area does not make me boring. However, not being able to do the things I enjoy has made it boring for me. But thanks to wburg, I now have found a place I fit in and that is in Midtown. So, now I won't be bored. Like I said to Curmudgeon, my husband and I have to make several trips a day to Placerville to take care of three elderly relatives so moving to Sac city is not an option at this time.

wburg -- Wow! You really have come to my rescue! I just can't thank you enough. You have provided me with so much to see and do I'm excited to get out there in Midtown. I also want to thank you for giving me helpful information instead of posting snarky remarks that don't do anything but make the poster look like a mean spirited idiot. One can love a city and show pride in it without having to post hurtful remarks. There is no excuse for bad behavior...period. Anywho...thank you again so much wburg for all your VERY helpful info! *Huggles!*

Think About It! -- Thank you for the suggestions. I just recently went to Union Square in San Francisco. I do love San Francisco. When I was a kid I used to live in Cupertino from 1970 to 1973 and I haven't been to San Jose in a very long time until just recently when my husband and I took the tour at the Winchester Mystery House. We'll have to check out Santana Row, thank you for the suggestion. We've been to the Fountains in Roseville. I like it, just wish it were bigger with more shops. But, it is nice.

conquest -- Yes, as I said in my comment to Think About It!, we have gone to the Fountains in Roseville. It is nice there. Didn't know about the Farmers Market in Auburn, will have to check it out, thanks! My mother in-law has John Muir's book, "My First Summer in the Sierras", so I can borrow it from her. And no, I am not trying to compare this area with SoCal. All I'm trying to do is find places and activities that have the types of things I like to do. SoCal has lots of artsy fartsy things, lots of cultural things and lots of hip and funky things along with fun people watching and elegant shops. All I have been trying to do is find something somewhat similar, but I am not in any way comparing NorCal to SoCal. I understand you hate pretentious labels and shopping. Shopping isn't for everyone. I'm not into the snob factor of the so called "pretentious labels", but rather, I enjoy window shopping and view interesting and often far out fashions and creative couture and glamorous outfits. It's the creative inventiveness and new cutting edge designs that I find fascinating. I couldn't care less if the label was Walmart or Christian Dior. However, the more innovative designs are usually found with the "pretentious labels" and not at Walmart. So my point being I enjoy viewing the artistic beauty of high end designer clothes not because I'm a snob, but because I'm an artist and I enjoy seeing other people's creative designs.

To all who are tempted to post snarky comments: Although I don't find NorCal as much to my liking as I did SoCal, I am in NO WAY running NorCal, Sacramento County, El Dorado County or El Dorado Hills down. Except for the snarky comments people have posted here, I have found the majority of people in NorCal very nice and much more friendly than in SoCal. I have the highest respect for this area and it's citizens. So please, no more snarky remarks from anyone. Don't waste your time or mine. If you take the time to post, make it helpful, not hurtful.

The bottom line to all of this is that people differ in their likes and dislikes and there's no harm, no foul, no right and no wrong to any and all of it.

For example, I was born in San Diego and principally raised in Newport Beach. What I loved about SoCal was simple. I loved the ocean, sailed, swam and boated. In the end, however, that was not enough to make me stay, nor was the inflated cost of living, among some other things, pleasing to me.

In the end I made my home in Sacramento which I quite enjoyed for many years. But by the time I reached retirement I was done with that too, and California as well. I'd already lived in seven other states and three other countries and wanted a simpler, more down-to-earth (my opinion only) way of life and a far different society akin to what I had already experienced elsewhere. So here I am in the Ozarks (or Aux Arcs) on the shore of a large lake with plenty of elbow room and abundant nature at very reasonable cost. Many would find it dull. I find it peaceful and nurturing. My wife does as well, especially having spent nearly a decade in this general area, about 40 miles from where we live, while in her 30s.

It's good of you and your husband to be taking care of elderly, frail family members. I don't envy you that. While my wife and I were prepared to do so should the need arise we were spared it by their deaths, some of which were at relatively early ages. Not what we would have wished for but in the end, sparing us the need to so disrupt and reorder our lives around them. Best of luck to both of you and those you see to.

MRS RMG, I did not mean to call you boring by quoting that phrase -- I am sorry you took it that way. That is a common saying that I have used to guide myself as my husband and I have relocated from city to city. I have learned to stop comparing and to seek out and enjoy the unique qualities of each new location.

I am so glad you found Midtown - that is in fact where I live now since moving to Sacramento a month ago from my beloved Portland, Maine. I, like you, really miss my former city. However, I am learning to appreciate and fall in love with the charms of Sacramento and NorCal, even if they are much different than Maine. It helps to live in Midtown, where there's always something interesting to do.

Kudos to you for taking care of your relatives -- you deserve some fun!

I completely agree! I was shocked when our new neighbors came over the day after we arrived, to say hello and welcome us! I have never had that happen before. And in fact, after living in the same house for 8 years in SoCal, I only knew one neighbor by name. The store clerks have all been super friendly here- we were welcomed to town by several of them, when we mentioned we had just moved to the area. And to go grocery shopping has been a dream. Other shoppers actually saying "excuse me" or moving when they realize they are blocking the aisle, or in the way of what I was trying to look at, has been been so refreshing.

I'm glad you found Midtown. It sounds like a place I would like too. Maybe hubby and I will check it out someday!
