Oh an just one more question...does anyone know of a good Kosher deli/restaurant in the area besides Sam's? Although I'm diabetic, once in a while I like to splurge and I enjoy good kosher food. I sure miss Canter's in the Fairfax area of Los Angeles and Jerry's Famous Deli in Cost Mesa and the Katella Deli in Los Alamitos. Nothing like a good Potato Knish, Matzo Ball Soup, Cheese Blintzes, Kugel, Kasha Varnishkes, etc. Sholem Aleikhem, שלום זיין מיט איר, ו מאחלים לך את כל החיים הטובה ביותר שיש לו להציע

*Smiles at la_cavalière* -- No worries. I'm a bit of a sensitive person. Us 'artsy fartsy' types often are. Yes, love Midtown. I'd love to live in Midtown if we didn't have to constantly be driving back and forth to Placerville.

While my wife and I were prepared to do so should the need arise we were spared it by their deaths, some of which were at relatively early ages.
Curmudgeon -- I am so sorry to hear about the early deaths of your family members. I can relate as I lost my father when he was only 58 years old. I spent 20 years caring for my mother with Alzheimer's and now my husband and I are caring for his family members. *Shrugs* it's just all part of life.

Oh, how I envy you that you were raised in Newport Beach and got to have the ocean, sailed, swam and boated! I am an ocean lover and when I lived in SoCal I was only 30 minutes from the beach. I used to go to the beach several days a week. How I miss that now living here in El Dorado Hills! Your lake view sounds very nice. At least you have some type of water view. I look out at a tract residential house across the street, LOL! I get to watch my young military neighbor family come and go in and out of their house and watch their little boys play in the front yard. It beats looking out onto an alley like some folks have in the big cities like NY, but I still miss the view I had in SoCal. Oh well.

The store clerks have all been super friendly here- we were welcomed to town by several of them, when we mentioned we had just moved to the area. And to go grocery shopping has been a dream. Other shoppers actually saying "excuse me" or moving when they realize they are blocking the aisle, or in the way of what I was trying to look at, has been been so refreshing.

I'm glad you found Midtown. It sounds like a place I would like too. Maybe hubby and I will check it out someday!
Yes, I was completely taken back with how friendly people are up here compared to SoCal! Down in SoCal store clerks and wait staff often acted as if they were doing you a huge favor by helping you or that you were inconveniencing them in some way. No one in SoCal ever smiled and greeted me with, "Hello! How are you today?" as I entered a shop like they do up here in NorCal. All the grocery store clerks here in NorCal are so friendly and willing to help. I like how they all seem to feel it is a great joy and pleasure to assit someone. I am constantly throwing my back out and when I go to the market, the box boys/girls seem overjoyed to help me with getting my groceries to my car. That is so refreshing compared to SoCal where it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to help me.

Yes, people in NorCal say excuse me or pardon me, thank you and you're welcome unlike SoCal. Also I've noticed there is no road rage up here. I spent a lot of time in traffic jams and on the freeways of SoCal and several times a week would have people tailgate, honk, flash headlights, give me the bird and I wasn't even driving slow! If the speed limit said 65 and I was going 75, people would have a fit as if I was going 25. People would pass me like I was standing still. I just don't see that up here in NorCal. It's so refreshing not to have someone bearing down on your bumper and worrying that they may shoot at you.

When we first moved into our house in El Dorado Hills, our next door neighbor and our neighbors across the street immediately came over and introduced themselves to us. My husband and I spent years at our home in SoCal and never knew any of our neighbors.

So, although I miss SoCal, I sure don't miss the rudeness of SoCal. Love how people in NorCal are just so so nice!

I had breakfast this morning with my Jewish friend, and she was thrilled that the restaurant we went to had kosher selections (she too has been disappointed with the lack of kosher deli's). And she raved about her selection. My food was great too. You may enjoy it also. Lake Forest Cafe

I know a lot of people in my area go hiking, bicycling, fishing, kayaking but I'm not into that type of stuff. I'm not the outdoorsy sporty type. My husband and I have no children and we are in our 50's. In Southern California we had Seaport Village in San Diego with cute shops and restaurants and the lovely ocean to look at and the delightful sea breeze. We also had in Southern California really nice upscale malls to shop in like South Coast Plaza. In Southern California we had Downtown Disney where we only had to pay to park and then going in was free and we could shop, dine and listen to the live music and people watch. We also had Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica where we could stroll up and down a very long pedestrian-only street lined with shops and sidewalk cafes and be entertained by street performers and people watch. I miss all that type of stuff. I never wanted to move to El Dorado Hills but had to for family reasons and we aren't able to move back down to Southern California at this time. So far I've only found a few unimpressive malls like the Roseville Galleria, Arden Fair, Westfield Downtown Plaza, Folsom Premium Outlets. I wasn't too impressed with Old Town Sacramento either. It seems that locally in the immediate area of El Dorado Hills where I live the only thing to do is dine out at one of the restaurants located in the El Dorado Hills Town Center and go to the movies. Maybe I'm missing something? Does anyone know of any places close by to El Dorado Hills that are similar to Seaport Village or Downtown Disney or Third Street Promenade (of course minus the ocean and beaches of Southern California) where one can shop, dine, see street performers/musicians and people watch? I noticed that a lot of places close early in the evening. We are night people and I miss the night life of Southern California where we could go someplace at 9:00 p.m. and it would still be open until midnight or 2:00 a.m. I’m not saying I want to find only night time places because we would like to find things to do during the day but it would be nice to find things to do at night as well besides just going to the movies. I've noticed places here in Northern California tend to close between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. I know there are lots of things to do in San Francisco, but I'm looking for something closer by since San Francisco is like a 2 hour drive. I'm looking for something that's within a half hour to 45 minute drive.
Husband and I were in El Dorado Hills and now are back in North County San Diego (Carlsbad/Vista) where we have wanted to be all along....I do feel for you as far as things to do there. We are both very social and found as you did that everything basically shuts down by 9:00 in EDH. t is a very pretty area and more of a hub to get to other places..i.e.:Tahoe, Napa,San Francisco. Yes, Old Town Sac is cheesy with the tourist shops and a few restaurants being about all there is ......Midtown (my pick) is more eclectic with good dining, good clubs for music and unique shops (think Hillcrest), take the pretty little drive to Plymouth and on to Jackson for a change of pace, Old Folsom (Sutter Club), Placerville....after a while, hate to say this, but they all start looking pretty much the same...
Oh, and try The Purple Place in EDH...kind of funky but they have various genre's of live music . Hope things get more interesting, I totally feel for you......it's just not the same as having the ocean nearby.

Thank you. As for alleys, Sacramento is full of them so if you get a longing for a NY-type view, now you know where there's one close at hand.

One of the things we like most about where we are is that sprawl, cookie-cutter homes all pushed together and little boxes made of ticky-tacky are non-existant and rare anywhere around here but for major cities, all three or four of them in the state, which we assiduously avoid.

The lake has almost 800 miles of shoreline (I believe Tahoe has 72). It ain't the ocean but it will do!

Awesome! Thank you so much caligirlz! Just wish they were open for dinner and late, as my husband and I are late night people, but hey, at least I can have a nice Kosher breakfast or lunch close by. Thanks so much!
