Typical generalization from someone who doesn't live in Folsom
My father worked in Folsom.

My ex was born and raised in Folsom.

Both agree that Folsom is a bit red-necky.

PS: The ****-blocker who swooped in and stole the girl I was seeing in Carmichael, lives in Fosom. But that's another story.

I like Folsom. I work there, but I have to question this article. If you drive around there are tons of empty business offices. Every new restaurant that opens up seems to shut down after a few months. Anyone remember Malabar, Tahoe Joe's etc?

There is a rash of articles that have been talking about new tenants finally picking up at the new Palladio. That is true, but this article makes it sound like all of Folsom is seeing a surge in new business which is not true. The article is a bit mis-leading.

Also the biggest shot to Folsom's well being is because of Intel. Period. If Intel did not come to Folsom it would probably still be a smaller sleepy town. Not to say that is bad. Just that the city of Folsom shouldn't prop themselves up too high. They do a good job keeping the area and roads well maintained. On the other hand they have debt and nowhere near the stellar credit rating and money management of should I say it..Rancho Cordova.

True, they've had a lot of restaurant closures the past few years. We miss Texas West BBQ, now we have to go all the way over to Roseville to eat there.

I can understand how someone born & raised in Folsom, especially before the big expansion south west would consider Folsom redneck. They do have a rodeo!! And a cattledrive through old town!!! (even though it is somewhat anemic these days). As a fairly new newcomer (but who has been visiting for years), I just don't see it. Redneck is Hanford, Tulare, Exeter...anywhere is the central san joaquin valley. Folsom is not redneck. I see a variety of people - a lot of professionals, families, and singles (with careers).

There has been a lot of businesses that have closed, but there are also ALOT of new businesses, granted there are not a lot of large employers. I don't think I can even name them all....but hmmm, for non-Palladio starters in the past year.....Freshi, Dickeys BBQ, Chick-a-fil, Burgerocity, Folsom Palace Asian Cruisine, The Habit, Curry Express, Baja Fresh, Chez Daniel, BJ Cinnamon, Lockdown brewery, Grirasole Pizza, Willow Cafe, Krua Thai, Relovit Consignments, Sassy Sweets...... To find out what else is on the radar, check here: Folsom Website - New Businesses Coming to Folsom

Not all restaurants close quickly. My observation has been those that had a very poor product - be it food or service, those are the ones that close quickly. Like Coffee Republics 2nd location in Broadstone marketplace. They had atrocious service. I'm not familiar with Malabar but I've seen the name, but Tahoe Joe's was there for a few years before it closed. Then there's other businesses that should have closed a long time ago, and it's amazing to me that they are still open...like Suderwicks. I guess there's enough people to pay for a view.

I don't think anyone is claiming the low housing inventory in Folsom is necessarily the result of an economic turnaround. Whatever the reason, it is a very desirable place to live, and the inventory reflects that.

You are also seeing the misuse or changing meaning of redneck. It isn't that loaded of a term any longer and carries very little social stigma, so it gets used more. It used to mean poor, uneducated, ignorant subsistence or barely above Southern farmer... one step above white trash. Now it applies to anyone living in a region with some Western/ag culture and/or economy. Half of any of the more redneck small towns in the valley are not even white but Hispanic. They pretty much have nothing to do with poor white subsistence farmers, even the poor white ones. Folsom is redneck in the same way Danville is redneck.

That's Pallidio. I specifically left that location out (except WF) since everything there is new.

I've heard Toby Keith's Bar and Grill has awful service. Talk about a business opening on reputation only...blehh, they did a horrible, horrible job.

I was horrified for a moment when I saw a Bee article today about a "Kenny G Jewelers" opening up in Folsom until I realized it had nothing to do with the poodle-haired smooth-jazz musician and was just a local jewelry chain that used the same name. Which kind of horrified me too, in a different way.
