I moved here a few years back as part of an office situation and I want - I *want* to get out - but my organization hasn't had any good jobs that are in a place I can afford to live on what they will pay, and the economy is bad everywhere, so its not like I can just up and quit. I *want* to leave. Diversity is not always a good thing, from what I see, a "diverse" place like Sacramento/California in general = more crime. A LOT more crime, and bad schools everywhere. This is a very unsafe place compared to much of the Midwest, South... heck, just about anywhere else in the US that's not one of the big non-California megametros.

My honest assessment is that it sounds like you're just channeling the frustrations from your own life. If it was anything else, instead of just complaining to people on the internet, you'd try to make this a better place. Or do you think you're somehow doing that?

And that's why land prices are so high in the Midwest and South, because everyone wants to live there.

California is a unique place in the United States, and it is by far the most dynamic state. You can take your complaining elsewhere. I'd rather kill myself before living in the Midwest or South (maybe except Chicago).

Sadly after 15 years I cant recommend moving to Sacramento unless you really like 100 degree temps or you think Mitt Romney is America' saviour and Obama was born in Kenya.
There are other areas that although are more expensive, had a better-educated citizenry and are a lot more interesting.
My 2c worth.

I grew up here, and I am seeing it decaying. What was once the best place to live on earth is turning into excrement, very sadly. My family keeps me here, but my advice to a single young person? Bail.

Serious question--in what way? I mean, it's easy to complain about all the silly/terrible (depending on one's perspective) politics, etc etc. I'm curious because I've noticed there are a lot of "not ideal" things that people cite that don't really affect their own lives. If I watch the news, I assume this place is a hole because of politics and gangs, but that's not the reality outside my door. There are other things that were the inevitabilities of opportunities of the past. Then there are things that can be argued are much better now than any time in the past 30-40 years (most downtowns are lively, most cities have less crime, etc).

I actually find this sort of funny since I'm moving from Dayton (which I love) to Sacramento. Of course I don't have a choice (Air Force originally from Washington State).

This is my last move before retiring in Portland OR. I have three years to look forward to in Sac and I'm extremely excited. And as a competitive cyclist I'm even more stoked!

I've lived all over--Omaha, Germany, Italy, small-town Oklahoma, San Antonio and now Dayton. I heard awful things about every one of those places and every one of those places was great when I lived there. Even Oklahoma, population 28K.

Every city has its problems. Some more than others. Focus on the positive.

There's a saying we have in the Air Force (primarily because we have little choice on what job or what location we find ourselves)--Bloom Where You're Planted.

Me...I can't wait to get to Sacramento. We're even flying in over Labor Day to hang out and scope out Midtown and East Sac. Can't wait!
