Commuting from the Bay Area to Woodland/Davis
Hi
I will have to commute from the Bay area to Woodland starting Jan '08.
I would appreciate any advice on the commuting options.
P.S. If there is no commuting options to Woodland, even until Davis and from there maybe through a local commuter advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

This will be a BAD commute - at least 3 hours or even more roundtrip. Amtrak does have a train called the Capitol Corridor ::: The Capitol Corridor: home ::: that goes from San Jose/Oakland to Sacramento and stops in Davis (but not Woodland)

You can always drive to Concord area or Vallejo and either take the ferry to Bay Area from Vallejo or Bart from Concord area. Either way it is a bad commute, I agree.

Hi Shriee, without knowing what you do, how many days per week you have to commute and your work hours, telecommuting options etc it's hard to say. I do know if you have to drive during normal rush hour , it's a very hellish, long commute. If you have room to adjust your work hours to say leaving the Bay Area after 9 or 10am, and leaving Woodland after 6:30 pm you'll be in better shape.
Also if you can budget it, have you considered renting a "commuter room" in a house or renting a studio and just living in Woodland or Davis during the week? That may help you out better with gas (if you're company's not reimbursing you) and also your sanity.

I forgot, you can also see if there's a commuter van going in that direction. I can't remember the name of some of the sites, but I'm sure someone reading must have that info.

My response would be.....do you really HAVE TO do this? Truthfully, it sounds absolutely insane to me.

Well at least its only three days a week. Is this a permanent commute or just a temporary one. If it was permanent job in Sacramento then I would look at moving when you have the chance, but if this is a temporary thing
I would start here.
Transit.511.org
The Capitols, offers a monthly and a ten ride pass. Since you are only doing the trip 3 days a week, you might price out both options and see which is the better deal. The train will take longer than driving, but you can sleep or do other things on the train ride.

I commute from Napa to Davis every day. It's about 55 minutes if I just drive it. Primarily, though, I drive to Fairfield, take the Capitol Corridor train to Davis, then walk to my office. It makes the commute about 70 minutes, but it's less stressful and I don't put as many miles on my car this way.
The Capitol Corridor is unlikely to be the cheaper option between the two, but it may be the more preferrable one anyway. On the plus side, at least between Fairfield and Davis, there aren't too many people riding. To me, the trick would be figuring out how to get to Woodland once you make it this far. This could be a really tricky proposition.

Yolo Bus 41 goes from Davis to Woodland hourly. For the new poster you may want to consider the train, however for the cost of the commute I would just drive and stay in a hotel on Monday and Tuesday night if you can do that.
