This. Just like any large metro area, there will be some neighborhoods where this is prevalent and others where it isn't. It's true that Sacramento has a higher share of working and middle-class residents than the Bay Area since cost of living is lower and high-wealth industries don't exist as much here, which may play a factor. But I don't think weather/geography play much of a role - some of the most gang-ridden areas in Southern California have more sunshine and are closer to the beach than most of the U.S.

We're a big city, so you see more of that sort of thing than in a more rural place like Sonoma County. We are historically a working-class and culturally diverse city... Yes I believe that was the original name. Thanks. And pardon me, but I am yet to realize Sacramento as a big city, at least not in terms of population density, in regards to Los Angeles, where saggy pants-ed types abound, but seem more noticeable on the much less crowded Sacramento City streets. But could not comment on whether image is seen more or less, in similar sized Northern Calif. cities.

Actually, this just may be the cause. A lot these thugs in Sac are originally from the Bay Area. From Vallejo and all the way down to East San Jose and East Palo Alto. There use to be a time when people didn't consider Sacramento worth a visit, and now they want to live in Sacramento, and bring all the thug mess with them. Even still, the thug culture is still more pervasive in the Bay area than in Sacramento. As problematic as some areas in Sacramento are, they do not come close to many of the most crime-ridden areas in the Bay.

I'm sure that's true. And in most cases, it is also more noticeable in certain spots around town. Maybe it looks worse to me because it didn't come about through my generation as Afros, bellbottoms and platform shoes did. But 'Mr, we sure could use a jock like Wolfman Jack again..."

It's a hard shell exterior image used to protect the thug who is born "under attack" from undesirable circumstances and threatening environment. The swagger side of it is used to elevate the thugs' sense of self worth and exude confidence and charisma. It is urban street smarts. You cannot compare healdsburg to sac. Santa rosa is a more accurate north bay comparison.

while I'm livin my life don't mess with me! Thuglife
