Like last year, I will be praying that sac gets to keep the lousy kings so they can build a downtown arena with a ritz carlton like in LA and more concerts would make a stop in sac

David Stern mentioned at a press conference yesterday that the Sacramento bid is a bit short of what is being offered by Seattle.

I'm actually pleased Stern mentioned that. Now Mastrov knows how much he needs to pony up if he wants his offer to be legit. I too hope the Kings stay in Sac.

What do people think about the "other" whale interested in bidding on the Kings, John Kehriotis?

Based on the deadline the NBA has established about submitting a verified proposal, it seems like they won't get the offer onto the table on time.

That would be reminiscent of failed legislation. It gets introduced, goes nowhere but the author can beat his/her chest, pump their arms and say they tried their best but the fates were against them. I can see KJ espousing that role.

Just have to bump this due to all of the action going on. Still incredibly leery of a massive subsidy, but Ranadive and Burkle make me feel a little better.

Mayor Kevin Johnson says the city has reached a preliminary agreement for a new downtown arena with an investment group that hopes to keep the Kings from moving to Seattle.

Johnson announced the agreement Saturday on his Twitter account. He said the group includes Silicon Valley software tycoon Vivek Ranadive, 24 Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov and billionaire Ron Burkle.

The City Council is planning to vote on the non-binding term sheet Tuesday.

Well, I wish Sacramento luck. As for KJ, if the deal really does get cinched, he might actually have to do some real mayoring - attending to infrasructure, budgeting, public health and safety, boring stuff like that - things I wonder if he's up to.

It sure looks like a better deal than last time. Still *seems* like a long shot, but there's certainly a credible way forward. You got ex-NBA mayor, along with several billionaires with big sports connections all rallying for those relatively few BOG votes needed to strike down the deal. I guess that could happen. We'll see.

Either way, like you say Curmy, maybe we can all get back to, y'know, governance. And that includes the City Manager, etc, who are all looped in to this right now. And I'll keep repeating: Whatever the outcome, KJ should try to take of this momentum and some of the connections he's made to try to attract private sector investment to the region. Companies that want to be here because of the colleges, transportation networks, and access to the leading edge of ag and software research, not companies that want to be here because we'll subsidize them.
