How is life in Sacramento for African Americans
We will be moving to the Sacramento area in a couple of months and was wondering how life for African Americans are there. Also how is the I.T. job market in Sacramento? Also, how far is Oakland from Sacramento?
Thanks

hmm... I'm white, but I'll give it a shot
I.T., I have no clue.
But sacramento is actually a very diverse area ethinically (surprisingly) and I've heard it mentioned a couple times that it is actually one of the most diverse cities in the entire country! I am so used to it now, but whenever I go out there is such a mix of people sometimes it would be hard to say there is a majority. Unlike many other places where it is obviously a majority white, or black (like Oakland), or hispanic or whatever...
So, other than some of the ghetto neighborhoods, people are pretty spread out and mixed up.
Now that I think about it, not really sure what you are asking or looking for in your question without being more specific...
Distance to Oakland? About an hour and a half, give or take with traffic and which way you go....
hope that helps.

Yes, you shouldn't have a problem here. Actually, my court is pretty diverse: Mexican, Puerto Rican, Black, White, Afghani.

I noticed when visiting this weekend that the
pocket greenhaven district is a nice diverse neighborhood.
It appears to be a solid middle class suburb with
many african americans.

Yes, but it also has a high african american contigent hence my
comment on being diverse.
Most elementary schools report about 1/3 white, 1/3 african american
and 1/3 asians students. Perhaps the more wealthy minorities working
or perhaps owning businesses in south Sac live in the pocket. It would make
for a nice commute.

How about for a hispanic person? I am of Cuban descent, but born and raised in the US. Will people generally just assume I'm another illegal immigrant until I start speaking english? I lived in a predominantly white neighborhood when I lived in Georgia (near Atlanta), and had this happen a lot.

CA has a large Hispanic population in most counties, not just the larger cities in the south. You should have no problem fitting in. Sacramento is considered to have one of the most diverse populations in the nation.
