Elk Grove What Went On?
Hi,
I'm reading from a number of people who moved into
Elk Grove 5-10 years ago and were initially very happy
(i.e. Katrina1) but who are now moving out.
I'm interested to know what went wrong since I believe
places like Natomas and West Sac are where Elk Grove
was 10 years ago.
Please identify yourself as having lived in Elk Grove
or not.
Regards.

I don't know for sure but I remember hearing from somewhere that Elk Grove attracted a lot of the Bay-area drug dealers.

Thanks, but your jumping a little ahead of my question and getting to the cause.
I just want to know what happened? Did it get dangerous, schools got bad,
too congested, not enough parks built, services are slow etc.
What are the exact problems.

My sister and many friends live in Elk Grove (I live in the foothills). The answer to your question would be all of the above. Elk Grove has grown extremely fast, so fast that services can not keep up with the demand. Just a few years ago Elk Grove was a sleepy rural town, now it has a population of about 160,000 and was the largest growing city in the nation a couple of years ago. Many of the schools are good, but again, there are a lot of new schools to keep up with demand. There have been some horrific crimes in Elk Grove in the news lately, but it seems that most have had some kind of drug connection. My friends still like living in Elk Grove and feel safe, but like any larger city, you need to take care.

Hey All,
I agree with kid blue - It has grown so quickly, the schools are good, but the population is outrageous! and with the drug dealers and the recent home invasions... it has put me on edge. But I have to realize that every town or city has something..... as a matter of fact I was looking into relocating to galt, and this week there was a carjack and shootings there.
I like my neighborhood and Elk Grove is a nice city... Just to much garbage going on... it's everywhere though

I transcribe police reports for the EGPD and I can say the bulk of the crimes there are property crimes and drug related issues.

All of the above. If you are traveling North on I5 or 99, the traffic is HORRIBLE. Gangs are a big problem. Drugs are a huge problem. It doesn't matter where, it's everywhere. There were a lot of huge, new houses purchased for the purpose of growing pot. Still going on. Schools are good. But bad city planning. They just built too fast, everyone moved in, and now there are a ton of renters and just plain junk going on there. There's nothing there that is keeping it nice.

Can't get out of here fast enough. Way to many people. I don't think the planning was very well thought out either. I hate the traffic and being on top of my neighbors. I am afraid what will be built on the corner of sheldon and bruceville. More homes? Wal-Mart? Apartment complex? Enough already. Time to move on.

And everybody just loves California!
I remember 15-20 years ago when you left South Sac on 99 or I-5 you would feel as though you were completely out of the city and out in the country side. For at least a good solid 20 minutes (maybe 30 mins. depending how fast you drove) there would be nothing but open space and random farm houses until you reached Elk Grove.
Now it seems that you barely even get out of the city and next thing you know you are in Elk Grove. That's really gross if you ask me.
Glad I got out when I did.

Well said. And I don't know why. As a Prof. I have a well paying secure job.
But why one earth do other people want to live here?
I came from upstate new York where nice homes cost $200K and for
$70K a year household income, you'll live very nicely. Also, people are less
busy (no one I knew had more than a 20 minute commute) so its more
social. The only downside was the weather. Six months of the year you can't
golf (but you can ski).
