I checked with craigslist which is only a few homes on the list.
Thank you so very much.
when are you moving?.. if you could also share what info you have on what you learn about rentals in Oroville.. let me know. Im planning on moving there in June. Thx a bunch.

Default Marysville, CA

We are a young retired couple currently living in Washington state, originally from California. Son lives in Lincoln, we are thinking about locating either in Lincoln or possibly checking out south Marysville..in looking online, there are some newer homes in an area called Edgewater, near the college.

Anyone familiar with these neighborhoods? I know that Morrison Homes are one of the builders, not sure about other builders.

Commuting to work is not an issue for us, we can handle fog, we just stay home if it's bad. And once the 65 bypass is in in 2012, the commute to Lincoln and Roseville will be better.

Just curious, we will go down and do some actual house hunting, but thought I would check...thanks

I live in Oroville as a government worker and I constantly hear about the "meth problem" from locals, and even more from out-of-towners. There are a few hot-spots for drugs of this sort, true, but most of what you hear about it is silly hearsay. Paradise may not have as much meth per-capita, but it has a much worse problem with other dangerous drugs. Oroville does have a bit of a problem with it's Wal-Mart monopoly, but any issues shopping locally can be fixed by a quick drive on the new highway to Chico. And true, Oroville Hospital is a horrorhouse.
But I think the positives far outweigh the negetives. The park system has received new funds in the last few years, and it shows. Several historical monuments are located right in the city, and they are really impressive, like the Chinese Temple. Property is cheap, and practically a steal compared to Chico. Some of the lower level schools arent great, but the high school system is rather effective. Las Plumas/Oroville high schools have a unified music program that often is rated the best, or close to it (1st from 2002-2007, consecutively), in the state, north of LA.
Commute to Chico and Paradise is easy, and Butte college is right between the cities.
Overall, the highlight of the town is probably the lake, when full.
I would recomend Oroville.

Having grown up in Oroville, I believe that I can offer some information from the 'younger' generation.

I went to Ophir Elementary, and having seen Stanford Ave and the others, I concur with the statement that Ophir is the best elementary school to choose from. BUT its a whiles out of the "main town" about a 15-min drive from my home in Thermalito. It is a year-round school, so you can choose whatever "track" works best for you! They have 4 rotational school years to choose from, I suggest whatever one has spring off for vacation because mine always fell during the time when I couldn't enjoy the Nelson Pool or other outdoor recreation during the summer.

There are the a lot of great houses up in the Valley-View Drive area: great homes, great people, and close to Ophir elementary.

High schools are really up to you: If your children will enjoy Marching band or FFA (the former "Future Farmers of America" association) also a Larger Campus on the way out towards Palerimo, then Las Plumas HS is for you guys. If you're closer to the Feather River and down-town, then Choose Oroville HS. You can always get a "transfer" letter so if you live closer to one or the other you can attend either, because its based on where you are physically located. Talk to the OHSD for more details.

Once out of HS, there are a lot of local jobs, a good one is the movie theater or wall-mart, but the biggest thing is the free bus to Butte College. Butte College is good to get all your GE's done, and then transfer to a CSU. I did this, and it was WAAAAY cheaper than attending a University straight off the bat.

Really, growing up from age Five, to 20, I never noticed the so-called "Meth" problem. You see the wacka-doo's at the Casino or whatever, but really what city DOESN'T have a drug problem?

In the end, yah Oroville is small, but thats why one MOVES to a small city yeah? For the connections, the tight-knit friendships, and senery.

Dont forget that the city of Oroville population is about 15,000, but the Oroville area has about 60,000 people. When you see figures such as Oroville has the highest....per capita, it probably is because our official population does not represent the true pop.
As per meth, yes, we have our share, but so does every town in the Nation. It runs rampant everywhere. I have lived in Oroville many years, and of course I know people who have had problems at on time or the other with drugs, the overwelming majority of people I know are not into the drug scene.
Also remember that as the birthplace of this mess, the County is at the forefront of solutions to drug use. One program that has started here is now a modle of success not only here, but elsewhere in many different towns.
Truely Oroville is a good place to live, there is the recreation, resources, and location to metro areas. Please dont be alarmed by the image we have shedded years ago, but some people just cant let it go.

Default Oroville

We found Oroville on a map and checked it out on city data and realized that it had a lot of the factors we were looking for. We then took a trip. It has nice historical architecture and hiking close by. But of course it does have a cultural issue that we found pressing. There was lots of caucasion refuse and retired WASP's (uhm they might be unhappy deer hunters who named their daughters Dale Earnhard) and a lack of "gentification." aristocracy that claims genetic superiority. There were no Subaru Outbacks driving around with ski racks. So if we live there well have to shop for organic food and find our friends in Chico.
We were there for only three days so....
Oh this radio station was an exception to the rule http://www.radiobirdstreet.org/

Im still thinking of moving to Oroville. I recently found out that Oroville had a couple of Superfund cleanup sites. Does Oroville have a higher rate than normal of Cancer and Birth Defects as some Superfund towns do?

I lived in Chico for three years, and spent some time in Oroville. I hated living in Chico (too small for me!), but if I was stuck and had to make a choice between Chico and Oroville, I'd take Chico, or go to Paradise, Magalia, and that area.

I've lived in oroville, ca for 23 years I was born, raised and started a family of my own here when my daughter was born a year ago I decided to leave because of all of the problems. even to the point of leaveing my family behind. I am a C.N.A at oroville hospital for 5 years and you talk about drug problems galore! unit one useually is a 90% Isolation unit because of MRSA and CDif and VRE and among much other things. South side is pretty bad. If youre into your children being a minority to Hmong, mexican, Hindu, Blah, blah, blah you name it... then great, but gangs are prevelent. the econemy is so bad my husband has not been able to get a job in over two years. and he's not lazy he's bent over backwards for one. Butte county is the poorest county in Ca. It IS the meth capital of the us per capita it has more than NY. I have been in the middle of many Riots in high school. Oroville per capita has more children taken away from thier parents than any other city in Ca. It is the highest priced housing and the lowest paid county. Most every one is on welfare it's the cool thing to do in buttte county. and don't expect to go to college if you're white because you are the very last to get any classes the illegal asians have priority over you, you get the scraps. and dont think that surrounding counties are any better thier not becase SF to redding are becoming one city. My father in law has done tractor mechanics for fourty years and use to only commute at the most one hour to go to the farm fields to work, now he's going more than 80 miles a day one direction. they have taken away all our crop fields and built on them. any way just a fair warning to any one that wants to move there. Not that the mountains are not beutifull they are I've lived there for years but not worth the problems and th school systems are something to be desired when the teachers are so frustrated with the children who are disrespectful and cannot speak english. want a good church though go to the palermo church of god now Called CFC christrian faith center. needless to say i'm in south dekota temporarily on my way to bismarck, ND I'll handle the weather vs. fight to survive and find work.
