Looking for a safe, diverse, walkable community with independent businesses, some cultural activities, with more singles than families. I've lived in downtown Chicago so big-city issues don't scare me - what do you think would be some good places to further research?

Midtown Sacramento has had quite an influx of better restaurants, lots of galleries, etc. since I lived there 20 years ago. It has independent cafes and theaters, the Second Saturday art walk, some parks, light rail. Culturally you will be disappointed comparing it to downtown Chicago, but it's probably your best bet in Sac. Stay out of the surrounding suburbs, as they tend to be bland and family-oriented.

As a native Chicagoan, I agree with the above. The good thing about Sacramento in your case is that it's very "Midwestern" for a California town. But, it's nothing like Chicago or any other similar-sized town in the Midwest.

Another vote for Midtown - I lived there 10 years and miss it everyday

midtowngrid.com, Directory for Sacramento, Midtown, Downtown Sacramento, East Sacramento and Old Saccramento Business Directory for shopping, restaurants, hotels, Sacramento's 2nd Saturday Art Walk, Entertainment and more!

PS - and you will not find ANYTHING in Sacramento that is like Chicago. Our Downtown is super tiny comparably
