I'm starting work in Yuba City, but want to live in the Sacramento region. I've got a couple of young kids, so I'm looking at Rocklin and Granite Bay. What's the drive time like? According to Google Maps, it's 45 minutes from Rocklin. How about Granite Bay, since there's quite a bit of local driving involved? Any other areas to consider with good schools and reasonable commutes? FYI my commute is currently 1 hour, so anything less than that is reasonable!

Sound doable. I have friends who drive from Yuba City to El Dorado Hills weekly for work. It is too far to do it daily, but many come from Lincoln to EDH daily. Anywhere close to Hwy 65 or 99, the main hwys into Yuba City would be reasonable. I know Hwy 65 past Lincoln is a 2 lane hwy (from Rocklin through Lincoln it is 4 lanes), and it can get quite foggy out there in the winter, so you won't always be able to go 55 mph. Hwy 99 is 4 lanes from Sacramento, but at some point, can't remember where it changes to 2 lanes as well. There are very few opportunities for passing. So, if you are ok with that....then you should be fine.

Granite Bay would be further. There would be more travel on surface streets to get to 65, although, there may be an alternative back road (slow) route. You may want to check out Antelope or Lincoln.

Granite Bay would be a beast. Seems like Rocklin would be a better choice. As caligirlz mentioned, you're not going to be looking at a completely stress-free commute, with two lane roads and occasional fog. (Fog isn't *usually* a problem though, so if you have any flexibility with your job to stay home on the days that it's really bad, that would mitigate that issue quite a bit).

Is there anything in particular you're looking in the Sac region that found you eliminating the local area? Schools, I'm guessing? I have no particular fondness for the Yuba/Marysville and don't know anything about their school system or private options--I'm just curious. You certainly wouldn't want to sign up for a commute that extends your work day by about 20% if you didn't have to, but I definitely understand that it may be worthwhile.

Hwy 70 is 4 lanes to Marysville, which is right across the river from Yuba City. Also, Hwy 99 will be 4 lanes all the way from Sacramento once current construction is done.(probably 1-1.5 years).

Have you considered the west Roseville area? I'm thinking Crocker Ranch or West Park or the general vicinity. I don't know your budget, of course. If you're considering Rocklin, the northern-most parts, which abut Lincoln, would considerably shorten your commute. Granite Bay, as previously mentioned, would be a bear. The least congested way would be to take Sierra College (off of Douglas) to 193 and then to 65/70. There just isn't a quick way to do it.

I'm in the Crocker Ranch area and it takes me 45 minutes door-to-door to the corner of 99/Colusa (Highway 20) in Yuba City. I go there monthly for meetings and generally go mid-morning. The fog can occasionally be an issue, but it usually lifts by around 10 so if you can be flexible with your schedule that would be helpful. And the fog is seasonal and usually predictable. It's a mid-winter thing.

Best of luck with your decision.
