How Bad is Traffic on Hyw 65/I-80 ?
I am currently looking for homes in Roseville & Rocklin area. One thing that scares me is things I hear about how bad the traffic is coming from Lincoln to Hwy 65 to merge to I-80 freeway.
For those of you that have that commute, coming from HWY 65 and merging to 80 and going to downtown. How bad is the commute during morning rush hour? If you were coming from west Roseville/Rocklin area, how long would commute to downtown take? I would also probably take light rail into downtown, so how much time would commute from west Roseville/Rocklin area using 65/80 route take to Light Rail stations?
Anybody that have this commute, I would appreciate any insights. Thank You.

H O R R I B L E.
Like LA and Bay Area bad.
That was my take when living there...when the rest of Sac was doing just fine-80 in Roseville was a parking lot. I hated that freeway.

65 to 80
It truly is not an ideal commute by any means. Not only does 80 get backed up, but 65 does now as well. We avoid the freeway at all costs in the mornings and post 3:30-4:00 or so. Just getting from Blue Oaks and 65 to Riverside exit --on 80 --can take at least 20 minutes at the wrong time.
My husband was taking the freeway and found himself so angry and frustrated by the time he got to work that he figured he needed a new job or a new commute. He now takes back routes and is living much more stress free.
Bottom line: If you are going to live in Sac--we love where we live, but the traffic is the pits.

If you're not planning on buying a house, then maybe consider renting in Davis as it's a much easier commute to downtown.
If you are planning on buying a house, then possibly North Natomas, Dixon area, as well as eastern edge of Woodland, where they got inexpensive homes, and is right along I-5 where you can take it south to Downtown Sac, and while there's traffic on I-5, it's no where as bad as the route you're describing.
If you definitely have to live in the Rocklin/Roseville area then yeah, find some back routes or you will be pulling your hair out.

Sounds Bad as I Suspected
It sounds like freeways are to be avoided during the peak times. What back roads do you take to avoid the freeways if you are heading toward downtown?

My wife works in Davis, and her westbound morning commute consists of taking Baseline Road (which becomes Riego Road) to 99 to I-5 North to Woodland, and then a county road South into Davis. Along the way, there are a few routes you could take to get into Sac (like Watt Ave, or continuing on 99 to I-5 South), depending on where exactly in Sac you needed to go, but I have no idea if those routes would be timesavers. For my wife's Davis commute, her backroads route takes just over 40 minutes, which is exactly how long it would take her if she took I-80 in ideal conditions. Well, I-80 is rarely ideal, so it's a no-brainer for her.
I'm so glad my new job is right here in Roseviile.

if you were driving, it would probably take around an hour (estimating) if you were to go during rush hour.
you would get jammed in downtown, then in arden, again in greenback to roseville, and probably again on 65.
you could speed things up by taking back roads in roseville. but in the end it will still take a while with stops and traffic lights. and using the streets towards downtown is a jammed up as the freeway.
i am not sure if the light rail connects all the way to roseville. check the sac rt website.

Hi guys/gals:
I wished this forum software provided a better way to search. It's the same one used on several other forums that I use and the search feature is horrible.
I just posted a question asking about the best way to commute from West Roseville to downtown Sacto. Then I saw this post.
mchoe, we are in the same situation. Looking for a house in the West Roseville (Fiddyment Farm) area and looking at the commuting options. I work in Yuba City and commute from N. Natomas now. Wife works in downtown Sacto. I looked at the Roseville T maps and I thought she could park at Taylor/I-80 lot and take the T into downtown. I think that would be more or less the same time as driving through the backroads. Might even be a little less costly in terms of overall parking/T fees.
Team Mom, hmm..Blue Oaks is close to where we are looking for homes. You said that takes 20 mins just to get to 65? Since I'll still be driving from W. Roseville to YC, geez..that's going to be a total of like 1 hour??
quasi888: I think I sent you a PM regarding the same ordeal. How do you like it there in Roseville? Are you on the East or West?
Maybe i need a new job in Roseville. Please PM me if you guys/gals are in the IT/GIS/software industry.
Thanks.

ironsteel, I responded to your PM.
TeamMom said it takes 20 minutes to get from Blue Oaks to the I-80 onramp at Riverside, not from Blue Oaks to 65. If you're coming from Fiddyment and hopping on Blue Oaks to get to 65 North, it's a straight shot and should take you no more than 10 minutes. (Actually, probably less. It takes me about 9 minutes coming from Westpark, so it should take you less, depending how "deep" you are in Fiddyment Farms.)
P.S. Yes finding a job in Roseville would be ideal, wouldn't it? I work in IT as well (software development, actually) and was looking at jobs with one-hour commutes into Folsom, Rancho Cordova, south Sac, etc., until I was fortunate enough to find a job across town (by the Automall) .
