Who Are You to Dis the Ghetto
Hey,
I just found this forum and a whole bunch of you guys dissing the
Sacto Ghettos. Let me tell you all, high and mighty living in your
gated communities and 30 year roofed homes that there is more
community in Del Paso heights and South Sac than any of your
foo foo communities.
How many of your neighbors will lend you money or medicine
without asking why?
How many of you can count on someone baby-sitting
if you need to work an extra job?
I'm guessing you don't even know your neighbors.
So don't be dissing the ghettos. When your in the poor-house
you need your neighbors and that builds community better
than any star-bucks or park..

Not so big now that you have someone from the ghetto to
defend the ghetto are you?
Bad => Poor (being in prison will ruin your job propsects)
but it does not meant that
Poor => Bad
It's a one way causal relationship not two way.
Also things are cheaper in the ghetto

The word ghetto is an unfortunate name to associate with a tight knit community. Those of us that live in the country feel the same way. We care about our neighbors and if someone needs a hand, there's usually a rush to help them out.
Good show gg have a rep point on me

We left South Sac. because it was turning into a ghetto, compliments of free housing for the non-workers. We liked our 1/2 plex and never had to worry about getting flooded. But the Government forced us to move to keep our sanity. Our cul de sac was made for 1/2 person residents, not single mothers with 3 or 4 kids who have no where to hang out but in our front yard/street for recreation with no parent supervision. So I'm sorry, I don't find your ghetto life style acceptable, unless I have no choice.

i dont think those folks that move out to the foo foo community are runnin away from kindness. its the other stuff you did not mention that they are runnin away from.
you know, dirty laundry stuff, the stuff that jesse jackson and bill cosby get yelled at for mentioning.
but your point is well taken. you got rep. i find kindness in rough place places sometimes.

I live across the highway from South Sac. A large swath of it is "ghetto," which I try to avoid and would not choose to live in. Sorry.
Coming from a poor family, I know that some of the most honest, caring and hardworking people one will ever meet are below the poverty line. It's not them (or you) that is the problem. In fact, if the entire Garden Block area was inhabited by people who are poor but honest and law-abiding, nobody would be calling it "ghetto" except for the shallow and uninformed. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Many people are not willing to risk the one bad thing (violent crime) for the sake of the other good things you might mention, if they are in a position where they do not have to.
Of course, in my short time here I have already heard about revitalization in "ghetto" areas like Oak Park and West Sacramento. And violent crime happens everywhere, by and against people of all economic backgrounds. In neighborhoods where thugs rule the roost, though, I think there is a greater need for that sense of community you mention. If it can go beyond babysitting and hospitality and extend into civic pride and neighborhood crime-stopping, all the better.

My husband and I left and never looked back. We grew up in a ghetto area and yes, there are some amazing people that made a positive impact in my life. I will always remember their kindness and hard work. But I think the negatives made more of an impact.
We live in a small town now and have had the opportunity to meet alot of great people who will give you the shirt off their back in hard times. Its alot like when I was growing up minus the drive bys, vandalism, theft, fights, murders, parties that last till someone gets shot or the police arrest everyone, people playing craps anywhere they can toss some cardboard on the ground, homeless people being unruly, grocery carts in the front yard, dog fights, etc etc etc. I like that I can take my kids to park and not see drug deals, prostitutes with fluorescent wigs, people getting beat up, homeless living in the bathrooms, people passed out on the park benches, and finding dirty needles tossed around.
To each his own. If you are happy living where you are, good for you. Being happy in life is important.

Thats true for any city, not just Sacramento. And unfortunately the criminals and druggies that live in these so called ghettos give the whole community a bad name, which includes hard working people as well.
Growing up, I lived in good, and not so good areas. So my idea of what a ghetto is may not be what everyone else considers to be ghetto. For example, I went to Phoenix a few months ago, and I went to check out some of the areas that I was told were ghetto and to stay away from, and I though they were perfectly fine. Me and my friend who went with me even had lunch there. So I guess its in the eye of the beholder to some extent.

I pretty much agree.
When I use the term "ghetto" I really don't refer to a particular part of town or race per say. To me, "ghetto" is a state of mind, a type of undesirable behavior, or a particular way of doing things that annoys the crap out of most people. There are tons of people from every race and backround, even wealthy white people I've interacted with, who behave pretty ghetto and with little class despite their fat bank accounts. It could be the jacked-up way they drive on the freeway, the way they scream at each other at the malls or restaurants, or how unprofessional they are at work, or how they talk smack about their friends behind their backs. That's where the real "ghetto" is in my opinion. Unfortunately, in the Sac region, there are a lot individuals like that. I've also met a lot of people that are poor, from the poor areas, and are Black or Hispanic that have had the best manners, the highest level of class, have a good head on their shoulders, and treat people with respect way more than some of the self-absorbed soccer moms or trustfund brats from Rocklin or Granite Bay.
