South Sac is great!
No way bud..Not "all" parts in south sac are bad. I happen to live in south sac and I happen to believe its a fine dandy area to stay. Sure stay away from Oak Park, the Meadowview Road and Mack road area..But I visit those areas daily and its not even as bad as it sounds. I live by Sac State, just south of the American River. And that area is as beautiful as anyone resident can put it. There are bike trails, public parks, the Power Inn light rail station, etc...Not to mention, the rehab of the old Florin mall area. That has been transformed into new businesses for us residents. I have a friend who lives in the Natomas area. Nice big house, friendly neighborhood..Just the other week, his family was robbed. Gunpoint to the head..Now i wouldnt recommend that to someone whos looking for a great place to live in sacramento. And city of Elk Grove, have you been there recently. Fastest growing city in america. Its been getting so populated there. Im just giving my point of view of the south side. I love living there. You people only hear stories on the news and assume its a horrible place. And by the way, I AM A MINORITY. Asian and proud.

Can someone comment on how safe it is in the arden arcade area or the area around roosevelt park in downtown sac... I'm also looking at condos north of downtown in the Natomas area, there are a bunch of condos that are pretty cheap. I have no idea how safe these area are, how are the commute to UC Davis Med Center. Thanks for any input.

I live in North Natomas, but I've also lived in South Natomas. Both are relatively safe. South Natomas has a more rundown vibe than anything. Most of the people with money hopped over the other side of the I-80 overpass in to what is now North Natomas. When I got here 3 years ago it was still pretty new, but slowly and surely the people that live in the South part are inching North. Not really that bad, by any means. My car is parked in the street every night and I've never had a problem.
Arden Arcade is a crapshoot depending on what part you're looking at. Other than driving through it on occasion and being close to the mall, I don't know much about the area. There are some rough parts, though.
I don't know about Roosevelt Park.
I can just say from experience that North Natomas is safe.

Arden Arcade is fairly nice, especially along its southern end...mature suburbs, close to a whole lot of shopping, public transit is meh but if you have a car it's okay. Getting to UCDMC would most likely mean taking the freeway: not a long commute by commuter standards, but you would get caught in the rush hour stuff in either direction.
Roosevelt Park is just south of a large state office complex and the State Capitol/Capitol Mall; most of the residential immediately around the park are condominiums (not towers, but 2-3 story townhomes.) The entire neighborhood was demolished in the 1950s/1960s (except for around three buildings) in the name of urban renewal. Parking is enclosed and most of the residential property is gated and inward-facing rather than opening on to the street. To get to UCD Med Center you can just walk up to the 8th & O or Archives Plaza light rail station and ride to 39th Street, UCDMC is a couple of blocks south from there. Or, if you prefer to drive, you can take the P Street/Q Street couplet to Stockton Boulevard, which takes you right there. Normally you would be driving opposite most traffic, so the drive would be pretty easy.
If you go a bit south, you get into Southside Park, an old residential neighborhood that used to have a fairly bad reputation but now it's mostly just quiet. Lots of old houses, lots of churches, and a large Asian population (much of which used to live in the neighborhood that got knocked down.) There are some great Chinese and Japanese restaurants there (if you aren't looking for fancy) and a beautiful large park (Roosevelt Park is small and kind of blah, Southside Park is beautiful.)
If you walk a bit east, you get into Midtown, where a large chunk of Sacramento's dining and culture is located. If you walk a bit north past the offices and Capitol Mall, you find Downtown, which has some high points and a lot of low points: higher-end dining, theater, and some shopping, but lots of boarded-up stores, lots of street folks, and an ongoing city identiy crisis. Walk west, and you hit Interstate 5, as well as several landmarks like the Stanford Mansion, the Crocker Art Museum and Old Sacramento, and of course the river.

I am graduating from college in a month and got a job in Sacramento...well North Highlands to be exact....and I'm curious about where in the Sacramento area the best place for a young professional to live is. I'm orginally from the Midwest so some place with down to earth people and a welcoming neighborhood would be my style of living. I'm looking to rent an apartment that isn't outragishly expensive, but definitely want something nice and preferably newer and well up kept. If anyone can provide honest information it would be greatly appreciated.

Look south of North Highlands, in Carmichael or Arden/Arcade. If you want to be a bit farther out in the country, look north at Rio Linda or Elverta.

First the Sacramento bee offers a tool to map crimes in a given area. Enter in the address of the place you are interested in, then enter in a radius. It will tell you which crimes happened there. Under the advanced search features you can select which crimes bother you the most.

The area around ARC should be fine. There is a CHP office on Tyler street which fronts Madison and I-80.
I am not sure if you are attending ARC for a special program or if you are just moving out to the area and planning on attending a community college.
Realize that tuition is much more expensive for non residents and that because of state budget problems tuition will probably be going up.

Safe area?
Hi, I was wondering how safe the area around T Street and 30th Street is? near the Alhambra Triangle. I work at the med center so it is close, but I heard south and west of the hospital can be pretty bad. thanks
