There are few, if any, big city river fronts in California. I think Sac is the biggest city with one. The closest one nearby, which has been newly developed, is Reno. Few Californians realize the potential of a well developed river front because there are few large rivers in the state. But Sac has a large river and its river front is an eye sore. Who goes to Old Town besides unsuspecting tourists and maybe people who like Velveeta cheese? It's a shanty town and there's nothing nice or interesting about it. Sac has the potential for a beautiful river front the likes of East Coast cites and European cities but for some reason the city leaders think shack looking buildings next to a large river with pot smoking derelicts on the water's edge is a nice thing to keep. Bulldoze it.

I'm glad you created this thread. Although I don't want it to be bulldozed, some buildings directly on the riverfront should be moved, and they should open up the waterfront.

The historical designation of the place puts many restrictions on the place, limiting economic opportunities and the synergy of the place.

Before you promote destruction/demolition you need to come with a plan. Exactly what should the place look like? Disney on the river like San Antonio's river walk?

Our riverfront does suck. West Sac is going to make us look really bad pretty soon.

Such a fuss over four blocks of riverfront. If bulldozing it was such a good idea, why haven't skyscrapers magically sprouted from the ground on the part of the waterfront that is already bulldozed?

Troll post or just a sting to native ears, this thread does make a very good point, in line with my feeling that Sacramento, California's Capitol city, has plenty of potential and historic significance [The Capitol itself, for instance], to share. But there just doesn't seem to be much real interest in utilizing it. Why cant Old Sac be revitalized and still retain it's historical value at the same time? Why should it be such a profane notion that L Street, across from the Capitol building become a retail shopping/entertainment area? Like any other city, this one is also a business. And when business gets slow, good business people rethink their methods and or reinvent their business. That to me, is what real diversity is about.
