Hello from Japan everyone,

I was curious about IT jobs in Sacramento. My wife and I are moving to Sacramento from Japan. I've been teaching English here now for 7 years and looking to break back into IT. Long term goals are enterprise IT. Currently preparing for Comptia A+ and Network +. Looking for entry level, help desk to start from the start of Dec 2015/Jan 2016.

How is the market in Sacramento?

My wife is a graphic designer looking into Sacramento's graphic design job market too.

Thank you in advanced for reading my first post!

Not very strong from the little that I know. There are some tech companies based about 20 mi east in Folsom such as Intel, but not sure about the Sac market. However, Ranadive has invested heavily in this area recently and there are rumors that he may influence the IT sector here. As of now though your best bet would probably be to research Folsom.

If you want to get into IT, you'll need to check out Rocklin/Roseville or Folsom. Depending if your experience is enough, you could work at Oracle or HP, and as sacite mentioned, Intel in Folsom. Wages are pretty decent here, a little less than the Bay Area but that is to be expected.

Also, Sacramento has a lot of graphics designers and I know some companies who might be willing to take her in if her work is good.

Best of luck to you!

Electronic medical records (EMR) is huge in California now. A statewide database is being developed. Two Insurers to Pool Medical Records in California - WSJ
Many of the area healthcare systems in the Sacramento area are already using their own EMR which need ongoing maintenance. You might want to check into that.

EHR worker here. It's incredibly difficult (almost impossible) for someone who's brand new and has no experience with any of the big name EHRs to break in, so for OP I'd say keep a look at the government which is posting a lot of entry-level IT jobs at this time.

A huge amount of IT support is now outsourced overseas and work done remotely, a good number of the remaining jobs are lower paying 'hands on' work like imaging PC's, replacing keyboards, etc. I don't know anything about the graphic design market here currently; several years ago my husband "was" a graphic designer but when the company he worked went out of business he couldn't find another job in that field. He took some courses and got his MCSE and got a job as a network engineer in Reno where we lived for the past 14 years (ugh)

It's all about the network. Also, my company is hiring. If the OP is interested, I have connections. PM me.

Hey Cali,
I'm actually looking at trying to move back to Sac- been in St Louis for about 3 years now and my husband and I are pretty sick of it. My husband works in IT- can you let me know (PM) what you have connections with?
thanks!

PM sent. I visited St Louis last year. I was impressed with the clean downtown and the friendly people, even the homeless & beggars were mild. I walked all over the city at all hours without any problems. I stayed at one of the filthiest hotels ever. I visited some of the trendy restaurants, but, sadly, they did not even come close to anything we have in California. And gooey butter cake, yuk. Glad I visited, and have no reason to ever return.

yeah- it's a huge change from CA- and people get offended when i say the food isn't very good out here.. So i tend to just cook at home. It was a good move for me a few years ago but i'm getting sick of it and hope to find a good opportunity back in my home state. thanks for the PM
