Sunday 6/28, late at night, driving from Placerville to South Lake Tahoe. Pulled over in a 55mph speed zone near Truckee and told that "back there in the reduced zone of 40mph" we had not reduced our speed. Issued a ticket for going "1-16 mph over posted speed limit". Looks like its about a $400 ticket.

Right where we were stopped the speed limit sign clearly was 55. Pointing to the 55mph sign directly at the place where we were pulled over, I asked the officer what he was talking about and he said the violation was a mile or so back. it was about 10:30 pm and we were just about the only car on the road. It was a tough day so we didn't backtrack to find the reduced speed zone -- if there was even one! We live in Texas and were driving our personal car. Anyone recommend a lawyer or some service that deals with traffic ticket issues?

I don't blame you at all for being upset. One thing I've used to "cope," (I got a $75 parking ticket after I parked where everyone else did, and I only parked there long enough so my daughter could use the bathroom) is look at it like the game of Monopoly/Life. You landed on the square and pulled the card, "Ooops! You drove down a dark road in the middle of the night and got ticketed by an ******* cop!"

The officer was probably recording you as you drove through the reduced zone, and ticketed you. Just pay the ticket and be more watchful of signs when you are somewhere unfamiliar.

I'm confused, Truckee is on I-80, and "Placerville to South Lake Tahoe" is I-50.

There is a reduced speed zone (40 or even 35 mph) in Placerville indeed, near the traffic lights. This is a common trap, local cops are always hanging there.

We were using the navigation system. Have no idea what road we were on but we saw signs that indicated truckee. We had eaten in Placerville at least an hour before the ticket. Maybe even 90 min prior.

They are different highways, check Google maps.

They were obviously on 50.

Should have busted out the iphone and started recording the cop and then panning to the 55 mph sign. That cop is not going to show up to court. If it's $400 I'd fight it personally but if it's like $100 or less I'd just let it go and use the Monopoly analogy posted above.

I know that this doesn't answer your question, but... Gosh, I hope you dont end up like those people who got lost in the desert out by Death Valley, or the ones who got lost in a blizzard. They just followed the navigation system, not realizing they were going down a road that led no where, got stuck. They died.

Please be careful.

As for your question, "Anyone recommend a lawyer or some service that deals with traffic ticket issues?" Sorry, no. I usually just pay my tickets.

Truckee is not on 50. Obviously. Maybe they just saw a sign.

You realize that a lawyer would cost you more then $400, right? Also $400 seems a bit expensive for going 1-16 over. Are you sure you were only going 1-16 over?

Anyway cut your loses, and just pay your speed tax.
