Roseville? Rocklin? Lincoln? (San Diego, Sacramento, Oakland: job, homes, crime)

Hello There,

We may be moving to the Sacramento area, late this year, and want to spend around $350k on a home. I have found several homes in our price range in the Roseville area. I was told to stay in West Roseville, so I was looking in the 95678 and the 95747 zip codes. I

am not familiar with Rocklin or Lincoln, so does anyone have any input?

We want to be in a nice area, with good schools and to be perfectly honest come from a pertty affluent area on the East Coast. I want to ensure we won't be in the "boonies," but in a nice suburban neighborhood. Also, we have family in Chico, so we would like to stay on the northern side of Sacramento and make it as easy as possible to go there frequently.

Could anyone refer specific neighborhoods or developments to me? You can never be too specific. Thanks!

West Roseville and Rocklin are almost one and the same. Roseville is an old city that has grown substantially, so it naturally has some "bad areas" (although, having grown up or lived in some areas like East LA and Oakland, I laugh at some peoples' definition of "bad areas" around here), but in general you'll find that this area is very suburban, clean, and safe, with newer homes. Roseville's population is over 110k right now, and it has a great Parks & Rec department that serves its population well, with lots of parks. Rocklin is newer, and half the size of Roseville. Both have great schools.

Lincoln also has shared in the recent population growth in the region -- in fact, I believe they were named fastest growing city for 2006 -- and it's got lots of nice communities. From what I hear, however, the city did not have the fundamental infrastructure to handle the population growth -- they are in need of new schools; and access is via Hwy 65 which can get congested.

Much of your answer depends on where you are in your life right now. Young? Kids? Retired?

Basically we are just starting out and his daughter lives in Chico, so we want to be relatively close to have her for the weekends, but the job market is what has us close to Sacramento. So, would Lincoln be the best bet? Is is a tad closer to Chico?

I'm from the Chicago area, I lived in rocklin and I felt totally comfortable there...better actually. Not a whole lot of difference between Lincoln/Rocklin though it did seem the older parts of Roseville were rundown, at least compared to the newer parts. It is definitley NOT the boonies. Put it this way -- I live in a Chicago suburb -- but it is about 50 miles out -- Rocklin/Roseville is more like 25 miles out -- a lot closer but still a nice suburban feel. In Chicago 25 miles out you will still have crime and density at pretty high rates, if that makes sense. Roseville feels more countryish, but its not, and its not physically very far from Sacramento. It was pefect for me.

Hey there, nice choice you have made considering roseville, or rocklin, and lincoln. There are some pretty new and upscale parts of rocklin, and roseville, and are both suburban towns. Rocklin has about 80k or so people now, and roseville over 100k as said. They have great access to the interstate and are very close to the outskirts of the sacramento area, so basically these areas are some of the last of the populated neighborhoods and subdivisions with businesses scattered before you get into the more rural areas of placer county. 350k homes are very doable in these areas, and a good majority of them are in the newer development areas as well which is what it seems like you are looking for. For the person that referred you to west roseville before the other areas, it is probably because of how new west roseville is, the homes are very new as well as the roads and the businesses. Lincoln is up HWY 65 a few miles from roseville, and rocklin, and is smaller. It's majority of inhabitants are in the brand new subdivisions of Lincoln Hills and Twelve Bridges which are very nice homes as well. It is situated closer to Chico as you asked, but only by about 10-15 mintues, if that. Any other questions of if I forgot anything feel free to ask!

West Roseville: good schools, pleasant tree lined subdivisions, responsive police department, golf courses, new library, public swimming center, excellent shopping nearby, and a great place to live!

I've been living in roseville/ rocklin for over 8 years, It's really quite a nice area , you might also want to consider Granite Bay too , really nice and its a pretty affluent area . One thing Roseville , Rocklin or Granite Bay would definitely not be considered " boonies" There are a lot of amenities that these communties offer and the best part is they are all very family friendly areas , It also depends on what part of Roseville you would choose, 95678 and 95747 zip codes are very nice. Lots of restaurant choices around here ,good mexican restaurants , a couple great ( authentic) Italian places not too far from Lincoln. 350 k will get you a nice place in virtually any of these neighborhoods

We live in Lincoln (Moved from San Diego) and love it. It is still growing but is much smaller than Roseville or Rocklin. They just built a new Library and have 30+ new stores and restaurants. We live in Lincoln Crossing which is just behind the Target Complex. Twelve Bridges is nice as is Foskett Ranch and even most of the old downtown area.

Lincoln has great bike and walking trails that wind around wetlands. Rocklin and Roseville are both great but I think you'll get more bang for your buck in Lincoln. It is also a bit closer to Chico. We have family in Paradise which is just 10 mins from Chico and it takes us a little over an hour to get there. Good Luck.

Depends upon how you like your traffic.
Lincoln in my opinion is screwed as far as traffic. It can take you close to an hour just to get through Lincoln with a 2 lane freeway that goes through there. It's heavily congested and the stop lights are literally on every block trying to get through. They built and built, but didn't do anything for the roads.
Roseville is okay, just don't go over the speed limit, the motor cops seem to be making all of the city's revenue.
I work in Sacramento and I never wanted to live past Citrus Heights because on a good traffic day, it would still take me almost an hour to get home. And if it's raining or there is an accident on the freeway, forget it.

It's not that bad, you just need to know all of the shortcuts, plan ahead, listen to the radio, and bring your favorite cd's haha.
