Right now the Arena is creating a certain amount of development in the immediate vicinity based upon rosy projections. We will have a much better idea of whether this is or is not a good idea probably two or three years after the arena opens and we see how much the arena actuallly does or does not bring foot traffic and energy to the surrounding neighborhood. When the Downtown Plaza was originally remodeled and it was signing major tenants like the Hard Rock Cafe and bringing in a Microbrewery to the Area, for a period it seemed like that spending the money to remodel Downtown Plaza was a good idea. But the remodel didn't take. Downtown Plaza didn't continue to draw people to K Street and the vacancies started piling up. Chris Webber built a restaurant in Natomas and despite being one of the most beloved members of the Kings, there wasn't enough spill over traffic from Arco Arena before and after the games to keep his restaurant open. Just because a lot of people are going to the game, doesn't mean that these people are also going to be spending enough money often enough to keep the businesses open that surround the Golden 1 Center open. That is the big unknown.

I hope the Golden 1 Arena works, but if it doesn't, you have an eye sore in the middle of downtown and it won't be an easy problem to fix, because its really difficult to raise the money again to build another arena somewhere else in the region. So this could be a problem for the next 30 years if this arena development doesn't work.

Arena development is going to help the redevelopment of that part downtown Sac. It is good because the core is cleaning up as it is, so it is really just a factor that is going to expedite the process. What will now take a couple years, would have probably taken a decade -given Sac's notorious backwards mentality towards progress.

It will certainly add to the vibrancy when there are events there.

Natomas will be fine, most of those strip mall's economic activity is from Natomas residents.

The should find a minor league hockey tenant for Arco (arcblow)

They can't. Part of the agreement is that the Arco site cannot be sued for any sports or entertainment venue.

And since ESC is not capable of hosting a full size hockey rink, there really is no competition there.

I would like to see a specific source that says Sleep Train can not be used as an entertainment or sports venue, per MyNewsLogin's claims.

The full non-compete article from the final comprehensive agreement (http://portal.cityofsacramento.org/~...prehensive.pdf) reads:

Sleep Train Arena: Non‐Compete. Following Final Completion of the Arena (as such term is defined in the Design and Construction Agreement), none of the Kings Parties (other than TeamCo in accordance with the Team Agreement) shall, directly or indirectly, develop, finance, facilitate, or otherwise participate or offer to participate in any management, operations, or activities at the Sleep Train Arena in competition with the Arena, including holding or otherwise facilitating the holding of any sporting, entertainment, or other community events contemplated in the Arena Agreement or the Team Agreement. The Parties agree that these restrictions are necessary to allow the Arena Project to be economically viable for the Parties and that, without these restrictions, the Parties would not be able to accomplish the goal of completing the Arena Project for the benefit of the public.

Thank you. That seems really dumb on Sacramento's part. Arco really had some potential to still be some sort of decent entertainment venue. It always seems that Sacramento is so backwards with these types of things. They always take one step forward, and two steps back. I am not sure if Sacramento will ever come close to reaching it's full potential.

Oh well, I guess they can always tear Arco down and build more warehouses, LOL

Why would Sacramento need two arenas?

For the same reason most other cities do. To provide an alternative to the one horse in town.

For example Arco had the potential to have hockey rink, while ESC does not.

Say two big concerts are happening at the same time in the summer.

One could be at Arco, the other at ESC.

That's kind of like saying "why does Sacramento need two night life districts". Why does Sacramento always have to settle for the whole one horse town thing?
