Love Fair Oaks ~ looking at homes in the Town Center area ( Fair Oaks/Sunrise). Can't find a true sense of the crime in the area as it seems it's clumped with Citrus Heights for some reason. Home is near to New York and Lemon cross streets. Young family safety concerns. Thank you.

Goto https://www.crimereports.com/. It shows reported crimes on a map so no confusion of location. In addition I recommend driving by the prospective area during different days of the week and different hours to get a feel for the neighborhood. Also, not all crimes get reported.

Do you currently live in the Sacramento area?

We considered Fair Oaks last year and I generally would consider that to be a nice area and perfectly safe for families. It has a bit more of a rural feel with lots of wooded areas (which I liked) and roads with no sidewalks (which I didn't really care for). As we looked around that area I found it could vary a lot from house to house and street to street. Million dollar house with lots of land just around the corner from some rundown property with 5 broken down trucks parked outside.

I've never really found that crime statistic mapping tool to be all that helpful other than to get an idea of where the really crap neighborhoods are. I get the sense that most neighborhoods in the general Sacramento area that are close to major thoroughfares and in proximity to the river have some issues with petty theft out of vehicles and the occasional smash and grab garage burglary...maybe a couple of problem houses with domestic disputes and shady characters hanging around. Also the Sacramento area as a whole has been having a lot of problems with transient and homeless populations especially along the river. This usually means various individuals roaming around with shopping carts and going through recycling containers for cans and bottles. So that might be something to look into if you have no tolerance for that kind of thing.

I'd be more concerned with what your immediate neighbors will be like and options for schools in the area for young ones. Also if you will be commuting - that Sunrise Blvd can be a beast which is ultimately what ruled that area out for me.

Good luck.

I live in Carmichael near El Camino & Walnut & have never had a problem with crime here. I've only lived here about a year, but I have neighbors who have been here for 40 years and none of them have had any burglaries or car break-ins. It's very safe and I'm sure it's the same in Fair Oaks.
