Anyone here originally from Maryland?

Maryland is considered California of the East, predominantly Democrats, high tax, strict gun control and more liberal policies. I may get the job offer with similar salaries in White Marsh, MD and Sacramento, CA, with same potential for career promotion, and job security. I'm single and does not mind cold weather. I love hiking and the beaches. Which one would be better choice, financially and socially? Thank you for your comments.

Sacramento is a lot bigger--not quite as large as Baltimore but pretty close. So factor that into your equation--if you don't like large cities, Sacramento is pretty low-key for a city of its size, but it is a large city. Sacramento is very flat (in the middle of a big, flat valley) so the hiking is similarly flat, and if you insist that your beaches be on the ocean, we're about 2 hours from the coast. If not we have beaches on our rivers and lake.

Regarding weather, we don't have cold weather here the way the East Coast does. Our summers get very very hot but they're not humid, so many find summers more tolerable than the East Coast variety.

Thank you all for your comments.

Is Sacramento the cheapest big city in California?

And compared to other California's cheapest cities, is Sacramento the one with the most job opportunities, and the safest one?

How about the risk of earthquake?

Thanks again.

The risk of earthquakes is really low here. I moved here from the Bay Area and was in the big earthquake in 89. We used to get quite a few small earthquakes there. None here so far. I wouldn't worry about earthquakes.

There is crime here like there is in any big city.

Like another poster said beaches are at least 2 hours away depending on traffic.

It's not really a cheap city anymore as rents have increased quite a bit since I've lived here.

You may not realize, that your criteria - predominantly Democrats, high tax, strict gun control and more liberal policies, are predominatly in the larger cities.

Also, despite strict gun control, there is a large pro-gun community, including the Sacramento region. I think California has one of the highest numbers of legal gun owners in the country. Gun sales have been huge thanks to Obama & liberal polices.

Thank you for your comments. Why did the rents increase, more jobs in Sacramento, or more people moving out of the Bay area to Sacramento?

I'm a bit familiar with White Marsh, it is just a fairly close in suburb of Baltimore. The trade off is basically Baltimore vs Sacramento.

Both have similar cost and taxes. Neither is cheap, but not nearly as expensive as some nearby major cities such as Washington DC for Baltimore or San Francisco for Sacramento. I'd say that they are fairly similar, not enough of a difference to be concerned.

Regarding lifestyle, that is simply a matter of taste. Baltimore has a very active downtown area, more so than Sacramento. But Sacramento has a decent downtown area augmented by Midtown. But the Inner Harbor in Baltimore is hard to beat in my view, so probably tilts my view towards favoring Baltimore.
