Pardon my ignorance as a relatively new California, but can someone explain the causal relationship between Indian casinos and white flight? :/

There isn't. The casinos near Sac are in the areas white people fled to. The fact that there will be one in diverse Elk Grove actually bucks the local trend.

People have a negative connotation to having a Casino in their area. Pechanga in Temecula was a huge tourist draw, and is a nice casino as far as Non-Vegas casinos go. When the economy was doing well the area was really nice. I moved away to Orange County in 2010 but every time I have gone back to visit I've noticed how run down Temecula has become. I don't feel this is due to the casino, but has more to do with economic climate of the area. As the other poster said; Communities stand on their own regardless of a Casino.

Sure, people are shot everywhere. Great point. Deeply insightful.
This particular incident was a bystander shot during gunfire exchanged between a suspect and officer. Tell me how often you see officer gun battles in hospitals, churches and police stations.

Card rooms in general have a bad reputation, people stay up all night losing money and getting liquored up, they attract a different crowd than regular casinos which have large numbers of security guards and usually send troublemakers packing before they have a chance to get in a fight or cause some other chaos..I'm not sure why I'm even telling you this though, haven't you ever been to, or at least driven by a large casino?

Yes, they will be dispersed into the surrounding area when they are drunk and their pockets are empty. And they will always be welcomed back in the next day no matter how desperate or stupid.

And since when is this going to be considered a 'large casino'? Medium sized at best, more like it.

Do yourself a favor and drive around outside Thunder Valley or Redhawk, come back and tell me about the 'dispersed drunks' . And regarding the Elk Grove casino, it will be quite large..not sure where you get your information:

As a gaming and entertainment facility, the project would feature a gaming floor with 2,000 slot machines, 84 gaming tables, a 12-story, 302-room hotel, a fitness area and spa, an outdoor pool, a 30,000-square-foot convention space/banquet area and fine dining restaurants.

In another article it states that the Elk Grove Casino will have 110,000 sq ft of gaming space which would make it bigger than the El Dorado, Atlantis or Peppermill in Reno.
