Default Where should I look to rent?

I just received a job offer in downtown sac that will be starting June 1st. I do not know the city at all and would appreciate any advice on good areas to look at renting in. I'm in my mid 20's and married with no children. I would like to keep my commute under 30 minutes. My wife wants a "nice" apartment, which I'm guessing includes a nice neighborhood, and a decently sized apartment that is fairly updated on the inside.

Thanks in advance for any advice and insight into the Sacramento area. I'm excited to move to Sacramento and begin my new job!

HMMM - Well I guess I'm just different. In my mid-20s I lived in Midtown. I liked the younger more kitchy areas...and if I didn't have kids that's where I'd be now

But I guess she wants the clean yuppie areas?? Look at Roseville, or Folsom

But your commute will suck.

Thanks for your post. What are apartments in midtown like? Are they mostly complexes? Also, what is it like living in midtown? I personally would love to live close to my work because I hate commuting.

midtowngrid.com, Directory for Sacramento, Midtown, Downtown Sacramento, East Sacramento and Old Saccramento Business Directory for shopping, restaurants, hotels, Sacramento's 2nd Saturday Art Walk, Entertainment and more!

Most apartments are converted craftman houses - or old 1950s complexes

look at sacramento.craigslist.org...

There's not much in the way of new clean safety like the suburbs...

I agree on the midtowngrid.com for rental agencies. I've rented from Nielsen twice and been quite happy (though i imagine still not as nice as owning your own home). I live now in a converted Craftsman. It's modernized on the inside (central heat/air is a must!!!) but has the character on the outside.

If you live downtown, try to find a place with a parking place.

Natomas might be a good temporary answer--who knows, could last longer. They have many, many large complexes, but these have pools, etc. and are relatively new as well.

So I have accepted the job offer in downtown sacramento and will begin in June. I've been looking at places to rent.

My wife and I would like to rent a townhouse or a home, we've had bad experiences with apartments. We are going to take a trip out to sacramento in the middle of may with the hopes of finding a place that we can rent. i'm trying to come up with a list of areas where we will look when we come out. Right now I'm leaning towards areas along the gold light rail line since that would be easy for me to commute to work.

I would appreciate suggestions of good areas and bad areas along the light rail line. It is only my wife and I but we would like a place with at least 2 bedrooms since we will often have visitors. Also, we need to be in an area where we feel safe. We are hoping to spend less than $1200 a month. I would also like to keep my commute time under 30 or 45 minutes each way. Lately I've been looking at rentals on craigslist in Rancho Cordova.

Is this a good place to be looking? Are there other areas along the light rail line that I should look into?

Also, is there very good public transportation from natomas to downtown? If so, I think I might be interested in that area as well.

Rancho Cordova is no safer than the central city or East Sacramento. Look at midtown Sacramento, East Sacramento or Curtis Park (Curtis Park is along the Blue Line light rail line, East Sacramento is on the Gold Line light rail line) if you want to be in close with minimal commute time.

Renting a house for $1200 a month will be a tall order. There aren't many townhouses in Sacramento, other than townhouse-style apartments in the central city.

You might be interested in 800 J Lofts, which is located downtown (close to work - no commute). The address is 800 J Street (of course!) The rent runs from $1120 to $3300, depending or sq ft. It's a very modern and upscale place with lots of neat amenities; stainless steel kitchen appliances, for instance.

I'm moving into a loft-style apartment myself next week; also to be closer to work, but it's a lot older & in a pretty rough part of town.

Welcome to Sacramento and good luck!
