Thumbs up Moving to Ukiah, CA

I'm seriously considering relocating to Ukiah, Ca upon retirement in the next year or so but want to purchase a home there soon and rent out until I'm ready. I selected this city as it's relatively large (compared to SoCal), has a hospital (I'm asthmatic), and loved it's quaintness. How would I go about finding out which areas are safe and which I should avoid? I'm also clueless about housing prices!

atwork,

I'd locate a good realtor in that area and get some input from him/her. Also, the tax assessors office can give you the median housing price in Ukiah and probably in Mendocino county. Ukiah is also mentioned as the best "small" city to live in California. Great wineries, apply orchards and even the largest buddhists communities in the Western Hemisphere!

Best of luck!

Great! But how can I tell a good realtor from bad? I already started by browsing the homes for sale in the Ukiah daily newspaper to get realtor names.

I would make sure the realtor can provide references from other buyers ~ and the good ones will be able to do that. And the Better Business Bureau can give you information on them as well. I think you'll do just fine! :-)

Default A Good Realtor

If you have a friend that's a realtor for a large company, they can refer you to a realtor in Ukiah that has been recommended by buyers and sellers in the Ukiah area. I have a good friend in Sacramento who works for Lyon Realty and she has told me this is a service that the real estate companies pay for but is free to buyers and sellers.

My friend will be able to refer me to recommended realtors in western WA in a couple of years. Hope it works......

I looked at property listings for the Ukiah Daily News and was floored at the housing prices; pretty darn high for a very small town. And I currently live in SoCal where I thought housing prices were over-inflated!

I really appreciated the tips on areas to avoid though! Thanks so much!

yeah atwork, prices are getting higher. not as bad as southern ca though right. i believe it was about 2yrs ago when prices started to sore up. ukiah is a nice area. it does get hot during summers but not as hot as sacramento area. ukiahs kinda like a retirement area, in my oppinion. theres no mall there in that town, and i dont think they will allow it. not sure what the population is but believe its not over 100,000. okay well let me know if theres a specific area your wondering about. or if you have any ?s.

Hi,
I am in SoCal, but I am planning to relocate to Ukiah as well. Since you know the town pretty well, you could please tell me what you think about the following areas in terms of safety, crime, theft, drugs, etc..:

1. The area west of the Ukiah airport, on the hillside, such as Crestview, Fircrest or Oak Knoll. The homes there have great views of the valley, but I don't know if it's a good area or not since it's so close to the airport.

2. The new home tract (built in 2003) on the way to Lake Mendocino (such as Beltrami Drive, Briarwood or Kenwood). Is this area a good place to live?

3. The newer homes on the way to Vichy Springs which is right across from the shooting ranch on Vichy Springs Road

What would be the safest place to live in Ukiah in your opinion?
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks
