Hey CD forum users! My family and I are considering relocating from the bay area to the Auburn area, more specifically Cool, CA. We're a family of 5, with 3 school age children. We enjoy the outdoors, love hiking/mountain biking/snowboarding and would love to move closer to Lake Tahoe, but wife doesn't want to deal with all the issues associated with living there in the winter. I guess I was just hoping to hear about daily life out there; schools, crime, sense of community. I've looked at this forum, and it seems many of the posts are a bit older. I would most likely commute into Auburn or Roseville and housing budget would be no more than 800k. Thanks in advance for the info/advice!

Your budget is more than enough for Cool. Very rural there, and very pretty.

For me the issue would be getting to Auburn. By far the closest way is 49, but that road gives me motion sickness every time. If that doesn't bother you, it's an easy commute.

$800k will get you a very nice home with acreage near Cool. NinaN is right, the twisty drive on 49 between Cool and Auburn in and out of the canyon is a little nasty. Your car will need brake jobs more frequently due to the steep grades. However, that commute is what keeps that area from rapidly developing and keeping its rural character. If you view it with that lens the 49 drive is a positive, not a negative.
