Considering relocation to Sacramento area for work and looking to rent a 2 bedroom condo/townhome in a good, safe area fairly close to downtown areas. I know North Highlands, South Sac and parts of Rancho Cordova are not safe good places to live. Looking for recommendations. Don't want to be robbed or attacked by gang bangers.

I would recommend the Pocket/Greenhaven and South Land Park neighborhoods south of downtown off the I-5. Here' are some examples of places for rent in those neighborhoods:

same with Sacreole. I would say stay on the I5 area. Land park and the surrounding areas are nice. Stay away from hwy 99, if possible. Also look into North Natomas. It's really close to downtown but it's kinda congested.

What's your budget? That's going to be the biggest determining factor.

Under 2k I know this is pushing it for a 2 bedroom townhome condo as I need space for gear and future family goals.
Sacramento is in major housing bubble right now based on looking at home prices and rentals. Funny growing up in Sacramento, I never thought that it would get as expensive as San Diego or Orange county for inland city! State jobs don't pay well but this new job would pay decent. I pay $1300 for a 1 bedroom now in San Diego and feel cramped as I don't have room for much stuff and want 2 bedroom with garage. I plan to buy in 2-3 years once job is stable.

Not yet but had the long ass interview. It went ok but the manager gave me the standard canned "we are still interviewing other candidates" reply at the end of the four hour interview. It was a tough interview so probably did not get the job so for now staying put in San Diego. I think they did not want to pay relocation costs to the area and the manager was complaining that I still have six months left on my lease back in San Diego.

That area is also prone to flooding.
