Default Young area of Sac/Art Teacher Position?

I got a job in Roseville and will be moving this summer. I am moving from South Carolina, so I should be able to stand the heat.

My boyfriend and I are in our late 20's and want to rent for a little while. I have lots of questions!

1) Is it reasonable to live in Sacramento and commute to Roseville? I would be driving against the traffic, right?

2) Is East Sacramento cool? We are looking for a reasonably priced area, but not a college area. I would love to be able to walk to the grocery store, bars, restaurants, etc, but still have easy access to Hwy 80. Any one have any ideas?

3) My boyfriend is an Art teacher. He will be looking for a teaching job in the Sac area very soon. Any advice for dealing with the State Dept or the individual school districts. I know that you are being threatened with severe cuts in teacher positions, so is it going to be impossible for him to get a job?

Thanks!

It will be tough getting a teaching job in art right now due to budget cuts. Tons of teachers have received pink slips and electives have been hit hard. Jobs might come up in the summer when they have figured out how much money will be in the budget.

We currently have a roving art teacher that is on grant money. There may be some positions based on this soft money.

1) That wouldn't be a horrible commute. Maybe 20-30 minutes, depends on where in Roseville.

2) I would recommend East Sac or midtown, both fit your description very well.

East Sacramento is a pretty quiet part of town. It isn't collegey at all. Being able to afford a place will be tough on a teacher's salary--describing East Sac as "reasonably priced" is a stretch. The reverse commute isn't bad if you're used to commuting. You might actually look at someplace in downtown Roseville--they have some nice old houses down there and prices are comparable.

It's a different sort of heat here--very little humidity, but we usually get a stretch or two of 100+ degree in the summers.

Yup...my wife just got her pink slip from Davis Joint Unified a few weeks ago.

Could be a blessing...maybe she'll find a position closer to home...but seeing as how all districts are affected, I'm not counting on it....
