I have Comcast, mainly for Internet. At some point they said that a basic TV package is mandatory for Internet and I don't think that is necessarily true. Anyway, I have some basic, non-HD channels + 2 international channels ala-carte and get speeds of about 90Mbps down, 6 up.

My promotion ended a while ago now and I'm paying way too much (IMO), so I'm wondering what is the best approach to get a new promo? Do I have to cancel my service and have another family member establish new service?

If I just call in and ask what promotions they have going, I haven't found much leverage in recent years with that approach.

Thanks in advance.

Comcast doesn't seem to be as hard nosed about requiring bundles as in the past. Best deal I could negotiate is something called Instant TV (streaming only) with 1 gigabit internet service for $90 per month on a two year contract. Just got first bill and it looks like I can drop the Xfinity TV app and save $10 per month. The increased speed is quite dramatic and I can count on 600-700 download using a wireless router and docsis 3.1 modem. I'm very happy with this but if 5G offers a better deal in the future, I'll just cancel and pay the penalty. Apparently not all cities offer the gigabit service but luckily Folsom is one of those that do.

Just stop it and sign up for free trials every month for awhile. Right now I have Acorn TV, which is actually pretty good. You can get a month of free Amazon video, Netflix (usually), Hulu, CBS All Access, YouTube TV, you can watch video for free on hoopladigital.com, if your library subscribes to it.

Anyway, lots of free options, if you can live without having 200 channels. I survive just fine.

Also, you can rent videos from Redbox. I rented a video from Redbox today - Bohemian Rhapsody. My laptop has a DVD player. They also have instant digital download rentals.

Lots of free and/or cheaper options.

You can watch the news for free on YouTube or the network websites.

If it's available to you get consolidated for broadband and get a streaming service. The reason I say that is because stupid comcast caps data at 1 terabyte per month and if you stream there's a good chance you will go over the cap. We pay $50 for unlimited 100 mbps with Consolidated. Streaming services range from $16 to around $50 a month.
