Default Help! looking for 'private rentals' / NON-apartments!!

Professional, married couple about to make a sudden relocate to sacramento area for job transfer / promotion. Can not stand the thought of a unit in a high rise apartment building -- any ideas, suggestions for where to track down rental listings or similar for more 'private' secluded individual unit/cottage/home etc.
Your assistance in helping us to not settle for a dreadful home in a new area is greatly appreciated!

two suggestions

1) craigslist

2) Drive around Midtown or which ever neighborhood you like and look for For Rent signs, each place I rented were from private homeowners

Fortunately there aren't any high rise apartment buildings in Sacramento, so don't worry, you won't end up in one.

I can give a hint - go to apartmentratings find apartments in area you interested in ...and read reviews about it. It shows ratings with different colors, choose yellow or red ones. I don't believe that terrible apartment complex could be situated at the middle of paradise. At least you will know area with "trouble"(traffic, people walking around, night noise, crime ... td & tp) apartments and probably you won't be eager to rent somewhere around.
