My wife works at sutter and says we will have our next baby there. Currently we are with UCD and its kind of a joke there. To us it seems there are too many interns and not enough attendings. Thats kind of expected since its a learning facility, but when you keep bouncing around from doctor to doctor it gets old. Out of the 5 times we have gone in, we have only seen our "official" doctor once and that was because the intern brought her in to meet us.
Sutter on the other hand has a good reputation for being a good baby birthing hospital.

I had my baby in Sacramento. (7 years ago)
I too had to decide between Sutter and Mercy. My friend gave birth at Sutter four days after I did at Mercy. SO I think I've got this question covered.
First - both are great places.
I preferred my Mercy experience over hers. I had a large room - my husband slept in the bed next to mine (not a chair, a BED) they gave him dinner and me dinner, and really spoiled us rotten. They listened to every word and it was the most enjoyable experience ever. I did not want to go home.

Oh yeah - my other friend had her baby at UC Davis too, and it sucked big time.

I've heard a lot of good things about Sutter, but my family's personal experience there has been truly terrible. This was not just a one time thing -- several different experiences with them in both maternity and more general settings -- and I wouldn't go there again unless I was bleeding to death. Maybe not even then.

great obgyn
I absolutely love my doc's group with Sutter. Her name is Dr. Elisabeth McClure, BUT my experience giving birth at Sutter was AWFUL!!! It wasn't so much the birth and the emergency c-section as the lack of communication that the nurses were providing and the room situation after the surgery. After nearly 36 hrs of labor, 12 of which were on pitocin (sp?), I was rushed in for a c-section. After they put me in a double room with another "FAMILY" that should have had the room just to themselves. I was pushed into a corner, had no working fan, no place for my relatives to visit - including husband - and the air condition didn't seem to work because the other family had nearly 10 people in there at all times. After numerous complaints to the nurses they stopped answering me. That is really not what I would expect, especially after a pretty invasive surgery. The next day they redeemed themselves by putting me into my own room, but it was those first few hours that I really needed the nursing help.
Anyway, that's my rant! I'm still with Sutter and currently prego with my second and very unsure myself as to what we decide to do.

I delivered at Sutter Davis, and had a great experience. I've also read that Sutter was chosen as the best place to give birth in one of the Sac publications.
Dr. Zoe Tilton is THE best. We knew a couple that would drive from SF just to see her. If I would've known I could've requested her to deliver me instead of whomever was on call, I would have. I regret it because the Dr. I did have had me pushing for far too long instead of doing a C-Section. Aside from that, we had a great experience-they have a video library, free snacks and drinks for your taking, and the nurses were superior. I can't say enough great things about my Sutter experience.
I had a friend who delivered at Mercy, and commented how good the food was, but that was about it.
Good luck!
