No, in what context would you think they meant Louisiana and not LA? Seeing as it's in a CA forum and they're both CA cities...

Not sure why most of us would care what's going on in the South when we live in CA. Anyone in CA knows LA means Los Angeles.

Because it's not like Sacramento has never had shootings downtown before, and because per capita California is a long way from being the state with the highest rates of firearm homicides, whether in Sacramento or Los Angeles, so asking if we were "as bad as" Los Angeles seemed like a total non sequitur.

Early Tuesday, police announced that they had arrested a second suspect — Martin’s brother. In a statement, police said that Smiley Martin, 27, was among the seriously injured in the mass shooting early Sunday and remained hospitalized under police custody. Police said he had been a person of interest even before his arrest.

He will be booked at Sacramento County Main Jail for “possession of a firearm by a prohibitive person and possession of a machine gun” as soon as his medical care is completed, police said.

CRIME - SACTO 911
Exclusive: Suspect in Sacramento mass shooting was out of prison despite 10-year term
“If he is released early, he will continue to break the law,” Sacramento’s district attorney warned the parole board.

The District Attorney conveniently forgot to mention that in January of this year the state Supreme Court ruled that prop 57 does not apply to violent felons. Which means that if Martin was appealing for an early release since that decision it would have been denied.

SACRAMENTO — Sunday’s eruption of gunfire near the state Capitol, which left six dead and a dozen wounded, appears to be a result of a fight between rivals that caught bystanders in a crossfire of automatic and semi-automatic weapons fire, law enforcement sources said Tuesday.

Police also announced a third arrest on Tuesday, 31-year-old Daviyonne Dawson, who was seen carrying a gun in the aftermath of the shooting, but did not actually fire it. Dawson is not accused of involvement in the melee, but faces charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. He had been released on bail by Tuesday afternoon.

Sacramento police say that two groups of men began firing at each other in Sunday’s shooting downtown and that at least five shooters were involved in what authorities are now saying was a gang dispute that left six people dead and 12 wounded.

I didn't know this until tonight but it appears that he was not released early. The board rejected his parole application and he was released in February of this year after serving a little over 6 years. A smart reporter called CDCR and got that info.

Quote:
Dana Simas, spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), said Smiley Martin was denied parole under the non-violent parole review process in May 2021. He was received by CDCR in January 2018 from Sacramento County with a 10 year sentence for corporal injury and assault. Simas said Smiley Martin had 508 days of pre-sentencing credits and had a "variety of additional post-sentencing credits," and was released to Sacramento County probation in February 2022.

So was Schubert lying or maybe she just conveniently forgot?
