West Sacramento is traditionally the city that Sacramentans look down on in the same way that San Franciscans look down on us. It kind of has a reputation as a down-rent place, the city's main street is lined with cheap motels (a relic of when it was Highway 40, the main road from the Bay Area to the Sierras) and is somewhat notorious for drugs and prostitution.
However, in the past few years there has been a ton of new growth: more tradtional suburban development in Southport, and comparatively high-density urban-style housing near the historic Washington neighborhood, plus a brand-new skyscraper office building right on the river. The current mayor is very progressive and activist.
So it's not quite a perfect place, but if you're just looking for a place to stay while going to school there, West Sacramento is just fine: check Craigslist, I suppose.
