Another "I'm moving to Sacramento" thread
Yep. Gonna be doing some contract work for the state.
Looking for a 2 bedroom house in a decent area. I'm a 53 divorced guy, not much concerned about night life, prefer nice quiet neighborhood. I'll be working there for about a year, then who knows...
Any areas to recommend? Any areas to avoid?
Thanks all...

A little more info?
LOL, you sound like my brother about ten years ago!
What is your approximate budget, any special stipulations, wants, needs?
After the year is up, would you probably sell or rent the property out?

I'm finding some decent (for me) places at the 1000 to 1400 range. I've been looking at rentals.com and sacrentals.com.
I'm looking to rent only at this point since I am only expecting this to be a one year contract, and wouldn't have much chance to make equity.
I'll be working on 9th street downtown.
I suppose the main thing I'm trying to figure out is the new resident;s version of the old mariner's map- "Thar be monsters thar!" In this case, "thar be bad neighbors thar! ARRRRRRR"
Great. I am talking like a pirate. I'm WAY too tired.
I'd like to stay under 1500- 2br or more, only need 1 bath, would like a garage.

You and me both Matey, I need a small yard for dogs and garage for tools. If by chance it has bedroom thats even better.
I'm getting mixed feedback on the area called "The Pocket" some say it's nice some say it borders the ghetto and to avoid it. Anyone?

My only pets are small critters in cages so I am hoping that won't be an issue!

What is decent to you?
I rented a wonderful 1920s craftman house at 26th and G for $1250, 2 bedroom 1.5 bath. Nothing but hard woodfloors, vintage moldings, built in shelving etc..
I loved it. It was Midtown and would have been a 5 minute commute (or bike ride if I was seriously that close to work)
But I'm guessing you want newer?? In the Suburbs??

Shameless plug for Tahoe Park
South of US 50, west of 65th, east of Stockton Blvd., north of 21st Ave. Lots of cute, older, well kept homes in this area. I have a 1940s postwar 2 bed/1 bath/1 car garage with a nice sized backyard for the dog in OK condition that I'm paying $1050/month for. You can find similar or better in the area in the $1000-$1300 range. If you want to be close to downtown/midtown and the freeway but still have a quiet neighborhood I'd recommend this area. Good mix of older, established residents, younger singles and couples, and young families.

Newer? 'Burbs? Not really one way or the other. Newer is overrated. I simply want someplace that is clean (no odd aromas!) and in good shape, and a safe beighborhood. I'm really pretty flexible.
Since I'll be driving out of town a lot on the weekends, convenient to I5 would be nice.
Supersonicblond: that sounds pretty good! I like the "older, established residents" part; I suspect young singles and couples would not be too intrigued by a grey haired computer guy who is never in much of a rush for anything. LOL

Oh- and Citygirl- the bike ride sounds great! I do have a bike, but it may cause a lot of people to have driving issues laughing as they saw me passing by!
