Ok so we are looking at homes all over Roseville and some fall near train tracks. Not necessary the railyard but just train tracks so I would like to know how far away you guys think is far enough in regards to noise, health, safety etc.... 1/2 a mile, 1 mile, 2 miles, etc..

Well I always enjoyed the tooting of the trains and I have lived within a few blocks of train tracks before

I'd stay away from the railyards - but the tracks are fine to be near in my opinion

I live like four blocks (less than half a mile) from one set of tracks and one block from another, I like them fine. But then, I like trains.

And no, there aren't major health risks from being near the railyard, there are (compared to all the other health risks out there) comparatively minor health risks from being within a couple blocks of the parts of the Roseville yard where they repair/service/clean/refuel locomotives and they use a lot of solvents. By the parts of the yards where they just happen to store cars, no, there probably isn't much of a risk, no more than being near a freeway or a major street anyhow.

It really depends on how much you like the sound of trains, and how loud. Things are louder near a railyard because there is switching going on (trains going back & forth, coupling and uncoupling, and generally bonking into each other) so keep that in mind.

Yeah there's a fairly well documented cancer risk for people living close to the rail yards, along with anecdotal reports of linkage to other health problems. But honestly, I don't think it's super significant compared to all the other health hazards associated with a major polluted city.

Living near train tracks is O.K. as long as its not near an intersection where the train sounds its horn. The horn is by far the loudest part of a train and they toot 24/7.

I love trains, but hate living near railroad tracks. I would want to live at least 1/2 a mile from the tracks.

I read a report that recommended 1-1/2 mile from trains and freeways. I live across the street from an Amtrak station and 5 blocks from the 101 freeway, 5 from the beach. I wouldn't live here if I was raising kids or growing food, however both are common. Black soot covers everything outside. Noise is constant. Mostly freeway back ground, seldom surf noise. 14 trains a day with in your face noise. Welcome to my SoCal hood.
