If you worked in Grass Valley - where would you live?
Not that I don't think Grass Valley is not less than wonderful - but what if I didn't have that job anymore (or if myhusband was job searching) we'd probably get jobs towards Sacramento/Roseville
So where would you live? Roseville /Rocklin? Lincoln? or GrassValley/Auburn-ish areas?

If I worked in Grass Valley AND did not want to live in Grass Valley, I would live in Penn Valley or Nevada City. Minimizing the commuting is one key to enjoying Grass Valley.

If I had kids I would not want to be working too far from their schools so working in Grass Valley and possibly Roseville, I would choose Auburn or Lake of the Pines area (Auburn Unicorp) depending on the type of neighborhood I wanted.
Hwy 49 is not the best commute, but the Grass Valley worker would be going opposite of most commuters. I would recommend a spot where you access 49 at a signal.
Try the commute a few times and see what you think.

I'm thinking the other way - but you think Roseville commute is okay?
I'm wondering if it's a job in Grass Valley where to live - because my husband will probably get a job closer to Sac - or if I ever get a different job it would also be closer to Sac...

Probably Auburn. Auburn has a great old town.

I would go to towns in lower elevations, it snows in Grass Valley
unless you want to drive in the snow

I would test "drive" both commutes. Depending on where you were in Auburn, and where you have to work in Roseville, it is usually not too bad (say compared to the Bay Area).
You can also take the Capitol Cooridor train/bus from Auburn to Sac.
Of course now with the gas prices so high, I personally would try to live and work as few miles apart as possible.
