Where would you take visitors in August?
(besides the State Fair)
I want to take my mother in law to Sacramento for a couple of days - she's never been and we're trying to convince her to buy a condo there when we move. She's pretty much on the band wagon but she's never been and well, hates heat. Although she says "As long as there is AC I'll be fine" But well, I don't want it to scare her, since it seems the only time we have free is in last week or so of August - the hottest part of the year!! UGH
I want to take her around and look at condos, and the different neighborhoods, so she gets a feel of which places she likes best (my guess Fair Oaks but you never know) We'll do that in the morning hours, but if you were "showing off" Sacramento Valley in August. Where would you go??
Trying to seal the deal here

San Francisco.
No, I kid--personally I'd go for the museums in Old Sac, then take light rail to Folsom and hit the museums and shopping in Folsom. (Light rail is air-conditioned.)

August is going to be a hot sell! Old town sac would be a nice place to see, but its going to be hot! Maybe do some shopping at the roseville galleria, or sunrise mall. Take her to a nice dinner at cheesecake factory. Show her around folsom, since i know you want to move there. You can go to folsom zoo, the prison, old town folsom, the bike trail...you might be limited but there are things to do. In the evening you could stroll around folsom lake.
Good luck!

Show her Folsom farmer's market Thursday night! Or Folsom outlet
My husband's boss moved from Folsom to Boston, and he told us he really misses Thursday's farmer market here.

Maybe you could blind fold her and take her to Olympia and tell her it's Sacramento. The capitol buildings look similar.
If that doesn't work, there are some nice restaurants in Old Town Folsom that over look the river. Old town Sacramento can be fun (maybe pretty hot in August) and is close to the river too. Since you mentioned Fair Oaks, there are several great little restaurants in old town FO and old town has a green feel to it. You might want to take her to the Slocum House for dinner if you are in FO. There's a great dessert restaurant (I think it's called Marleen's or something similar) near San Juan and Fair Oaks. The have all kinds of homemade desserts, sandwiches, and salads.
Maybe you will luck out and it will be cooler in August than July again this year...

Cafe Bernardo or Fox and Goose Pub or Crepeville for breakfast. There is a nice rose garden on 15th between L and Capitol (M Street). Then try the Marrs building on 20th and K for browsing shops, as well as alot of J and K streets from the 19th -26th streets. Go to The Naked Lounge in a restored Victorian on 15th and Q for coffee/tea. The Railroad museum in Old Sacramento should not be missed. Also try the Crocker Art Museum and/or tour the Stanford mansion. Go to Tower Cafe for dinner--make sure to sit on the patio even if you have to wait--very cool and pleasant oasis even in August with all of the trees, dense plantings, and the misters.
On a second evening, a good (after sun goes down) dinner location is Rio City Cafe in Old Sacramento, but only if you sit outside, and best if you are next to the railing---the view is great, and if it's a Rivercats night, the fireworks are right across the bank reflected in the river, right next to the attractive Tower Bridge. Food's only so-so, but the view is nice. Mason's is good for modern fine dining. For more traditional fine dining Aioli, which is very nice and in a vibrant area on L and 18th. And they have a beautiful patio too, though no misters.
If she can come during the Second Saturday in August, you could walk around anytime between about 5 and 10 in the Midtown Area.
Drive in the fabulous forties in East Sac, down T Street between 34th and 50-something, and in Midtown in the 20's streets between D and V.
Pick up a Sacramento News and Review too.
Remember to emphasize that we may have some intense heat in the summer, but it also means amazing evenings in the spring and fall where the temerature stays perfect all night, and you can walk around in shorts and a T shirt, and have dinner outside whether at home or at one of the many restaurants with outdoor dining.

SacTotally I PM'ed you - you gave me a chuckle with your answer - Yes I've been to all those places and knew of all those things
But I have a70 year old Mother In Law whom I'm not trying to entertain I'm trying to convince that Sac is a tranquil place to retire!
