I must admit I'm in a mischievous mood right now, but almost every post I read, people are not using there/their/they're correctly. I teach first grade and a good chunk of my seven-year-olds know how to spell these words correctly in context.

Really, it's not that difficult.

There: over there
Their: they own something
They're: they are

I know this is the internet and people can get away with atrocious spelling and punctuation, but I'm beginning to think that most people actually don't know how to use there/their/they're correctly. THERE, I'm done.

Oh, I just thought of another one: than and then. California is hotter then Maine is NOT correct. Come on people.

You should post this in the education forum. It also drives me nuts when people use them incorrectly.

I should, however, I think people from Sacramento should read this because THEY'RE the ones that are representing us as intelligent (or not) people.

Let us not forget the oft abused it's when they mean its. Or where when they mean were. Or loose when they mean lose. Drives me nuts. I could go on, ad infinitum, ad nauseam.

I know the uses - but I type FAST and most of the time do not look at spelling - so with fingers flying I sometime slip up

As I would guess alot of us do

I've given up on correcting others' grammar/spelling errors long ago.

Having said that, I'll share some of my lexical annoyances:

- "Walla/wallah" for "voilą"
- "Pre-madonna" for "prima donna"

Then there's "For all intensive purposes" instead of "For all intents and purposes."

How about "the spitting image?" "Oh, I could care less".

I've seen plenty of people trying to tell you "come on" through typed words spelling it "common".

What should it be? Please don't say "the splitting image." I hear that a lot. There's another one. Many people write "a lot" as "alot".
