Folsom--worth the extra cost??
Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me their opinions with regards to the higher costs of living in Folsom versus Roseville. Are there specific advantages to Folsom over Roseville as far as raising kids? Schools? Parks? Overall cleanliness and crime? Obviously Folsom has a light rail connection and a smaller feel to it--and having access to 50 which seemed significantly less crowded than 80 when I was there. Any thoughts??

Easier commute to downtown, otherwise both areas are fine. One thing you might want to keep in mind about Roseville though is a potential problem concerning some health risk due to the large Roseville railyard operation:

Being a now Folsom resident I'd pick it over Roseville any day. Just do a search on folsom and you'll see all the good things being said about it. Folsom has great schools, lake access, hwy50, bike trails, shopping, etc. Don't get me wrong though, I've heard a lot of good things about Roseville.
From a re-sale standpoint, I think Folsom will have a greater chance of holding its value, and thats what you are seeing now. Read up on the other topics and you'll see why.
Roseville has a ton of inventory so I'd say if you need to move soon, and are looking for a good deal on a big house thats probably the way to go. My main problem with Roseville was my commute and dealing with hwy80. If you work in the north area than you should be fine.
good luck

We rent in Folsom, but can't afford to buy here right now. So we have looked at Roseville, because the schools are better than most Sac area, and home prices have dropped much more. When we look there, it is okay. But for the most part, it is not as nice and clean as Folsom at all! Some people seem to think Roseville is the best place around, but I think they have not been in Folsom much. lol! And the schools here in Folsom ARE better. Newer, and higher test scores, less "free lunch" culture, etc.
Folsom has all that others here have said-- lake, trails, stores, etc. It is also just more secluded feelings from all the Sac spawl, I feel. The lake kind of cuts you off from all that. It is quieter here. And it is clean. The city keeps all the streets clean, the bushes and grass cut, the garbage picked up. The city works very hard to keep Folsom very nice, and the people are very nice here.
ALSO, do a Megans Law check. You will see that Roseville has about four times the child molesters Folsom has. I think there are about seven here, all in the older part of town...
Wish I could stay. We may just continue to rent to keep our kids here.

I also would pick Folsom. I have lived in Roseville for a year now and I just don't like it. It is nice enough, but there are also a lot of scummy areas and a lot of the people are really snobby for some reason. Since my husband's job is in Roseville, it is convenient to live here, but we are thinking about going to Folsom or Lincoln and commuting.

That is interesting. We have also found some people in Roseville that seem to be a little snobby. lol! We have asked why? Roseville is "okay", I mean better than most places around Sac, I think. But it's not Granite Bay or Folsom, at least in our minds...
But we are still looking there, because of house prices. Even though the drive to Folsom will suck money in gas...*sigh* We may just keep renting and stay.
