It's all good
Oh, come on. I live in a mid-sized town in Iowa and there is a gang and a buch of whites acting black, Mexicans, Blacks, and of course the drunk angry rednecks late at night, but this is everywhere. Some bad, some good. I want to live in L.A., but unfortunately it's a little to pricey. All you need is street smarts and security locks and some confidence and you're all set.

Sacramento? A scary place? Go to Stockton. You haven't experienced a dreadful place until you've had the unpleasant experience of Stockton.

Ha ha! We moved to Sac to avoid Stockton (my husband got a job there, but we didn't want to live in that hole).

I was born in Santa Monica, but I lived in Sacramento from the age of six until the age of twenty-three. I still have many friends and family that live there and I have been going back once or twice a year for the last decade. My thoughts.....When I lived there I thought that the place was a joke. It was boring. So boring that I used that as one of the reasons to move out of that city. I always felt safe for the most part, but then I did grow up there. Sacto has had it's problems with gangs and violence, but even back in it's heyday (think Brotha Lynch and X-Raided) it was still pretty tame when compared to any other large California city. I even lived in Oak Park the last two years I was there and never felt threatened. I dated a girl who lived close to Ben Franklin High and there were four seperate gangs that lived on her same block. Not a problem there, either. I have friends who live in Oak Park now, and they all say that the area has tamed down considerably over the years. They would all laugh at the notion of Sacto being a scary place, and they were all born there.
I still know the place like the back of my hand, but Sacto has changed over the last ten years. Every time I go back I become a little bit more weary with each visit. Not sure if it is just me or the city, though. Last time I was in town I rode the Lite Rail from DT to Arden. Some thug dudes 'borrowed' some young business-types cell phone and were generally giving the dude a hard time. I got off before any real drama went down, but I am pretty sure that the guy did not get his phone back and if he made a deal of it he probably got stomped as well. Made me glad that I lived in a place where I did not have to deal with that type of stuff anymore.
Also, Sacto has a huge meth problem. Deny it all that you want, but it is true.

Yeah, my friends and I went to the Bay at least twice a month just to have something to do. We used to call Sacto 'Cow Town' (yeah, I know, Vacaville is cow town) because it was so bland.

Care to elaborate? I now live in Maine and while there is crime here (more so than the locals care to admit) I can't think of anything that would make the news. The entire state has about 30 murders a year, the majority of them involving a family member.

Hmmmm. My GF and I live in Tahoe Park a block south of Broadway near 59th. She's a native and has lived her all her life, and she's actually had the worst crime happen to her in the burbs... she was held up when she was working at the record store in her 20s - by a white kid - and car jacked out of her driveway in Fair Oaks (when she was married) by some white punks wearing hoodies who sold the car an hour later to someone else.
The record store holdup was at gunpoint, too.
Our neighborhood is quiet, we're right behind the elementary school. There are all kinds of people walking around here.
Crime can happen anywhere, and there are bad neighborhoods you should stay out of at night if you don't live there. Recently, we were driving back from Crepeville in Land Park and saw a man get his car sideswiped on Broadway just before we passed Stockton. We stayed with the guy, who was very nervous, waiting for AAA to tow his car - and talked to a crack addict hooker as well as another neighborhood guy - both black, both drug addicts with bad teeth - who were perfectly nice.
Of course, no cops showed up, and I haven't noticed the increased police presence that Saint Kevin promised all of us (what a joke for a mayor).

I feel what your saying. BK till this day has some tough spots though. Talikn early 90's. I got family from Bushwick. A friend of mine was there last year and seen a dude get stomped out unconciously. I've seen dudes in Yonkers of all places, letting off rounds in the air on a regular street at night. I dont know man, I got to say it does stay rugged out there in some areas.
