Man, Philly got one of the highest crime and murder rates, at least for the last 4 years. Everybody I know from Philly knows that hoods out there are wild as s***.

One notable thing I remember about Philadelphia from a summer I spent there about 10 years ago was all the abandon cars strewn about town -- and people were living in them!

Nah, we just parked them in front of folks driveways, forcing them to pay us to remove them.
Actually, they don't need to live in cars, there are plenty of abandoned homes.

Now, in answer to the question in the original posting, Sacramento has some areas of concern, but other cities do too.

That is an interesting comment. Sure - there are some bad neighborhoods, just like in any city, but I think that overall Sacramento is a great city. I grew up there - spent about 20 years of my life living downtown, and I miss aspects of it (not the smog and heat, so, I guess only two things), but would definitely consider moving back. If he was talking about North Highlands of South Sac, he is right. The pocket is nice from what I remember of my friends living there.

Sacramento has bad neighborhoods like any other city. Do your homework and you should be fine. Sacramento doesn't even come close to the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.

I'm 24 years old, born and raised in South Sacramento. I have to say, of course not all parts are nice, but I've never had any issues with anything negative. Since you live in the Pocket area, that's considered a "nice" are. I live right outside of "Oak Park" for 2 years now and I'm not saying it's a bad neighborhood, but, to most it may be; haven't had any issues yet.

I'm a single mom and I lived there for a year. No problems at all. You just have to know which areas are good.

Man, some of you are painting Sacramento to be a really bad city/ area. lol at some of the comparisons in this thread. Sacramento can't even hold a candle to Stockton, East Palo Alto or Compton with regards to ****ty places to live. Sac has its hoods like an other city but overall it's a pretty tame place. Here is a quick ranking of the nicer to worst places to live in the Sacramento area, feel free to debate me on it:
Really Nice:
-El Dorado Hills
-Folsom
-Lincoln
-Rocklin
-Loomis
Nice:
-Roseville
-Pocket/ Greenhaven
-East Sacramento
-Davis
Average:
-College Greens
-Natomas
-Midtown
-Downtown
-Orangevale
-Fair Oaks
-Carmichael
-Elk Grove
Bad/ Some Parts are Nice:
-Rancho Cordova
-West Sacramento
-Tahoe Park/ "Med Center" Area
-Citrus Heights
Absolute Garbage:
-South Sac
-Oak Park
-Del Paso Heights/ North Highlands/ Rio Linda
